We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim D Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kim D, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process was thinking about preparing a foundation that would sustain me without a 9-5. I needed to feel that I was working towards my passions and not someone else. I needed to feel empowerment from another realm.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a multidisciplinary artist who loves working with fabric, specialized papers, and other embellishments to address social issues concerning women and girls. I am most proud of successfully publishing two children storybooks. I have gotten where I am today by working hard and connecting with other like minds to hear their stories and strategies for success as a creative. Nothing in life is not easy but if you have a passion and want it bad enough you will find yourself going in the right direction hopefully with the least amount of distractions. I overcome challenges by having first moments of crying, yeah I said it I cry to release and then comes my positive self talk to empower me to leave the pity party because I have creative things to do. I have realized at 61 that it is all needed in order to birth who I am divinely. The lessons I have learned are like counting the grains of sand on the beach. So much in my life time. I want folks to know that self determination, believing in yourself (in spite of who, what, how, when, where), staying grounded in your WHY, and put the work in, even if it seems like it is not work, all things in life are relational and what we do today impacts and influences our tomorrow.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Beach of course, Even though I am a creative I am not a social butterfly creative. So my idea of best time ever is going to the beach, eating some delicious plant based food, exploring all things nature. I would take them to the Vegan Block Party, full moon yoga on the beach, Omg, this question makes me reflect on all the times I have been told I need to get out more. I am working on that. smile

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
