We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Milan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimberly, why did you pursue a creative career?
When I have imagined my life in the past and looking forward, I have always seen myself becoming a creative artist. There is nothing else I would rather be doing. I was born into the arts. My father, Fequiere Lucien, is a singer and owner of the band Volo-Volo De Boston. I watched my father in his creative process writing songs, recording in the studio, performing, interviews and more. From seeing my father do it, I knew I could do it too. I was always receiving high achievement awards in arts and music. I was scouted in the fifth grade by a musical company, The Boston Children’s Choir, at my elementary school. There, I began professional music training which consisted of vocals, music theory and instruments. My first professional singing experience was at 11 years old with The Boston Children’s Choir touring the state of Massachusetts and New England. The rest was history.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a singer, songwriter, actor, digital creator, creative, and visionary. Not limited to only that but beginning here. My work consists of singing and writing solo musical projects, acting in musicals, theatre, television and film projects. When people ask me what I like more: singing or acting; I tell them they both serve different purposes in my life. Music is my first love. It was how I was able to express myself when I didn’t have the confidence or even the words to share. When I discovered acting it challenged my mind so deeply. I was always fascinated with psychology and people. I love that I could become different characters/different people essential. Understand their world and why they are the way they are without judgement. That gave me the ability to understand people and have more compassion for people on a deeper level.
One of my proudest moments in my career thus far has to be my recent project I star in alongside other amazing talents: A Place In the Dark Feature Film. I portray the character Krystal and have an original song that made the soundtrack.
What sets me apart is my personality. I can find commonality with anyone I meet. I make them feel accepted, which has helped me network and that is so important in any industry especially the entertainment industry.
The biggest challenge was within myself, in my mind combatting negative thoughts Growing up there was a lot of instability from moving homes. In the moving, I lost many friends and career opportunities and because of that it made me feel like anytime something good would come my way, it would be taken away from me. It took me years to overcome the mental and emotional battle and trauma from those losses. The biggest loss was losing our home in the 2008 market crash which led my mother to make the decision to move to Florida. Through a lot of spiritual work, inner healing and therapy I am the strongest I have ever felt mentally.
I’ve learned I can grow through any adversity and adversity makes me stronger. I am not defined by my circumstances; I know I can attract anything my heart desires I let my heart lead me and it never steers me in the wrong direction. My mindset shifted from I wondered if it would happen to its already done.
My brand Milan’s Muse reflects all the things that inspire me, and I use my creative work to inspire others or simply bring joy and entertainment. Invoke, Evoke, Inspire, encourage was my first slogan and it still rings true. As I continue to grow my brand, I have a huge vision of what it will be. I have just scratched the surface.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many amazing things to do in South Florida, I couldn’t even give them all. My favorite places to go that I would want to take my best friend would be Wynwood Walls. This area is always evolving and there have been amazing additions in the last year. The Wharf in Miami (or Fort Lauderdale) very lively, outdoor social area and great DJ. This is more north but The Ave (Atlantic Ave in Delray Beach).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who played a role in my achievements and successes today. Faith is a huge part of who I am so I would be remiss if I didn’t give thanks to God first. I give many thanks to my mother and father (my brothers and aunt) who have supported my dreams since I was younger. My parents recognized my passion and gift for music when I was only four years old and put me in places where I could hone and grow that gift. I had the space to go after my dreams and not everyone has that growing up. I am very grateful. Lastly, there are a couple of groups and church organizations I want recognize because it was there, I was surrounded by like-minded, creative people who became my best friends. We spent our teen years and early twenties doing radical creative works and those moments will always be with me. Those same friends have gone on to do amazing things in the music and entertainment industry. They are my biggest motivation.
