We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Portuondo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimberly, is there something you believe many others might not?
“The customer is always right”
We have based our marketing model around the concept of the customers’ not always being quite right, which is why they hire us for our expertise. While the customer is usually right about what they may want or need for their business, they might not always know the best ways to go about achieving that goal. This is where we can come in with a helpful hand to help our clients along the path to success.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Just out of college, I was doing marketing for an insurance agency and although I loved what I was doing, I wasn’t able to be creative enough with the work since it was a 9-5 job focusing on one specific industry. Through the insurance agency, I was doing speaking engagements for local business owners about the importance of marketing and insuring your business. At the end of each presentation, I would have people approaching me asking me if I could do some marketing for them. That is what sparked the idea that I could potentially go into business for myself, but I still didn’t take any definitive steps to make anything happen.
It wasn’t until I was getting adjusted at Markson Chiropractic and my chiropractor told me to quit my job and start working for him that I realized it was time to make a move. A few months after that in August 2014, I had quit the insurance job and started KP Kreative with just Markson Chiropractic as my client. Since 2014, I have worked with a variety of mentors and clients to grow my agency from a team of 1 (just me) to a team of 17.
We help businesses with their digital presence with services such as SEO (search engine optimization), web design, social media management, digital advertising, etc. Our services have been particularly helpful lately as most consumers have moved online for all of their purchases.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In my last shoutout, I mentioned a couple of my local favorites (Southport Raw Bar, Tarpon River Brewing, and Manor Lanes). Those all bear repeating, but some new ones as well:
1. Wine Garden is a hidden gem about a block off of A1A. They have a great selection of wines and offer both brunch and dinner menu that is wonderful.
2. Park & Ocean is another beach adjacent spot which is great for live music and pet friendly, which is a must for our team mascot, Laudy.
3. Riverside Market – little neighborhood spot for food and drinks
4. Invasive Species – locally owned brewery with a funky FL feel
The list could honestly go on!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In some of my previous interviews for the Shoutout series, I’ve given some well-deserved thanks to a few of my mentors and my team at my agency. Without those folks, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
At this point in my life and career, I want to give a shoutout to a colleague/friend of mine, Dr. Susan Mitchell. We met through a consulting group I was doing some marketing work for. She was a business coach for that group. Susan has been extremely supportive over the last couple of years, while my company has been going through some major growth phases. She has helped me to pinpoint areas of opportunity within the business and in my personal life. Both of which have lead to some very clear and crucial decisions being made to further expand the company. So major thanks to Susan!
