We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimone Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimone, what do you want people to remember about you?
As a medical doctor I want my legacy to be that I provided true patient centered care. I want them to remember the conversations had that empowered to have a good quality of life despite their chronic illness. I also want them to remember that I prioritized my own health to inspire them to take care of theirs. I want them to remember that no one can pour from an emty cup. There is more to life than your medical diagnosis. Your only limitation is you.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am medical professional from the University of the West Indies medical class of 2019. My matriculation into Medical school was not easy as the tuition fees loomed as a challenge but with utilization of my prayers and academic drive, I was able to complete my degree on a full scholarship. Medical school had its own challenges with many sacrifices as my time was consumed with studies and honing my future craft but it failed in comparison to my medical career. I work at the largest public hospital of Jamaica and as such, there have been many long shifts with missed meals or occasional important family events – for the sake of health care. After working, on the frontlines in the pandemic, I recognized the need in my country to have larger emphasis on prevention of the development of non communicable diseases and as such completed by Masters of Public Health at UWI in 2023. I have learnt along the way that humans have their limitations, and somethings I must leave to God. I am simply the tool He utilizes but I am not Him. As such, I have catered my brand around being the medical doctor who portrays to her patients the importance of taking care of yourself before the development of a medical illness. My brand involves a passion in health and fitness illustrated by my active involvement in the dance community as a professional dancer gym enthusiast, as well as occasional educational seminars on health and fitness with service organizations eg rotaract. A motto I base my brand on is “I am more than just medicine”.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Jamaica because diversity and variety are at our core! Out of many one people is our motto and as such so is our social scene! I would love to show any visitor to my island our beaches as close as bob Marley beach all the way to our Negril beaches and if they prefer fresh water, I would allow them to experience our waterfalls from Cane river or Reggae falls in St Thomas and maybe even all the way to our famed Dun’s River falls in St Ann. For our cuisine, we have many options – a true melting pot of cultural delights. A favourite location of mine that provides this experience is Market Place in Kingston. We have night time activities ranging from acoustic concerts, bars, night clubs, karoake, fashion shows, adventures eg ziplines or atv rides and artwalks as well. Some of my favourite places include Regency Bar at the Terra nova hotel, Julie Mango Restaurant located at the Pub, Reggae falls in St thomas, Thatch Hill river Park in St Mary.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Firstly, God. If it were not for His grace, mercy and blessings, I would not be the doctor I am today. My parents. They have been integral in my development and academic achievements.
Jermaine Watson, who inspired me to be more than an another cog in the wheel but a instigator of change.
