We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Euretig and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristen, do you have a budget? how do you think about personal finances?
I do have a budget that helps guide my monthly decision-making. It’s very important to be cognizant of what’s going in and coming out each month. A major component of any financial plan is building up an emergency fund for any unexpected expenses. It’s like an insurance plan and provides a sense of security. While saving for my goals like trips and retirement, it is absolutely necessary for me to enjoy life in the present. I’m prudent with my spending, but a once-in-a-while splurge on an experience or item that brings me joy is vital and actually motivates me to stay on track, so I can do it more often!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

At Brooklyn Plans our goal is to boost women’s financial confidence. We want our clients to build a healthy relationship with money and learn skills that they will use throughout life. We believe that all women deserve the joy and freedom that comes with being in control of their finances. My journey started with my love of education. Having dedicated years working as an English teacher, I knew I had a knack for instilling valuable information into others. Personal finance was a natural interest of mine and I often found myself doling out advice to friends and family. I realized it was time to pivot. As I worked my way up through various private firms and the financial non-profit sector. I realized my true calling. Studying hard and securing my license as a Certified Financial Planner set me on my way. This hasn’t been a necessarily easy journey, it has been a lot of hard but rewarding work. Having the opportunity to work with an array of clientele – ranging age groups, wealth levels and geographic location, I identified a gap in service being provided to millennial women. That’s where my idea for Brooklyn Plans began to develop. As an entrepreneur, we’ve run into speedbumps that any business owner can expect to experience, but my background has taught me to roll with the punches and even when you get knocked down, the important part is getting back up. I’m proud to employ a team of women that share my vision and strive to empower all women to take control of their finances today and forever.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend visiting Miami, our first stop would have to be Versaille. A cortadito to start a busy day is a must! We’d have to take a stroll through Wynwood and see the latest art installations, take a peek into some galleries and do a bit of shopping. The vibe of the area is unmatched! Obviously you can’t come to Miami and not hit the beach. I love to stay active, so a ride up the Miami Beach bike trail is the perfect way to get some sun and a workout. That once-in-a-while splurge I mentioned comes in the form of dinner with a view. A stop at La Mar for dinner is sure to be unforgettable. I live for live music, so Ball and Chain for salsa dancing would cap off the whole experience! I love Miami and the melting pot of cultures. There’s something for everyone here and I love sharing the city with others.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to recognize Lauren Lyons Cole, she was an inspiration and supportive colleague to me on starting my own firm.
