Meet Krystal Phillips | Founder & Creative Director| KAPHILL

We had the good fortune of connecting with Krystal Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Krystal, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Well, my journey to starting KAPHILL was deeply personal and fueled by a desire for change within the fashion industry. After working in product development for over a decade, I found myself increasingly frustrated by the lack of representation and inclusion, particularly for black women like myself. I felt unheard and unseen, both professionally and personally. This frustration eventually transformed into a driving force to create something that not only catered to black women but celebrated them in a luxurious and inclusive way.
I wanted KAPHILL to be more than just a clothing line; I wanted it to be a space where black women could feel empowered and embraced. The fashion industry often overlooks or marginalizes black women, especially in the realm of luxury fashion and experiences. I saw an opportunity to change that narrative by creating a brand that centered around the beauty, elegance, and power of black women while remaining accessible to all.
So, in essence, my thought process behind starting KAPHILL was born out of a desire to challenge the status quo, to provide a platform for black women to shine, and to redefine what luxury fashion means in today’s world – inclusive, diverse, and unapologetically bold.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career journey has been a winding path of discovery and growth, shaped by both my experiences and my unwavering passion for fashion. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2010 with a degree in Production Management, I delved into the retail world, where I gained invaluable insights into the industry. My first significant role was as an assistant buyer at C21 department stores, focusing on lingerie. However, I soon realized that my true passion lay in the creative process of fashion rather than the buying aspect.
This realization led me to transition into production, where I spent the next 14 years honing my skills in product development for major players like Macy’s and Rent The Runway. Despite my love for fashion, I initially hesitated to pursue a career in design out of fear and self-doubt. However, over time, I learned to trust myself and embrace my ambitions, understanding that not every piece of advice or option presented to me needed to be followed.
My journey hasn’t been easy; it’s been filled with challenges, setbacks, and moments of doubt. But through perseverance, determination, and an unwavering belief in my abilities, I’ve overcome each obstacle that stood in my way. I’ve learned that manifestation is powerful, but it must be accompanied by consistent hard work and dedication.
What sets me apart is not only my passion for fashion but also my willingness to embrace the journey, no matter how uncertain or daunting it may seem. I want the world to know that success is attainable for anyone, regardless of their background or circumstances. You can achieve your dreams if you’re willing to put in the effort and remain open to the opportunities that come your way.
My brand, KAPHILL, is a testament to the power of perseverance and resilience. It’s a celebration of black women, their beauty, their strength, and their unwavering presence in the world of fashion. I want my story to inspire others to pursue their passions fearlessly, knowing that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
