We had the good fortune of connecting with La-Tanya Greene and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi La-Tanya, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from San Fernando, Trinidad. My mother and father were also born there. After leaving Trinidad, I lived in the U.S. for a few years and then my dad got offered a job in Germany. Living in Europe and going to school on a military base was amazing! It introduced me to a different culture, language, cuisine, and experiences that I will never forget. Eventually came back to the U.S. for college. My move to Tennessee was disheartening. I knew I had to leave my parents and my sister, but I was not really nervous about living on my own. My parents have always been there for me and have helped me in so many aspects of my life, but they also taught me to be independent and hard-working. I was also excited to start college because I’ve always loved going to school. After living in Tennessee for a few years, I got into modeling and I fell in love with it. I’ve always loved taking pictures, so being in front of a camera felt really natural to me. Eight years later and I’m still modeling! I pride myself in being a driven, hard-working, open-minded women. I believe that my Caribbean upbringing, mixed with the opportunity to experience a different lifestyle overseas contributes to who I am today.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a part-time model, working towards making it a full-time thing! What sets me apart from others is my ambition and confidence. I am well aware that in the modeling world, I would be considered as “too short” or petite, but I have never let that stop me from pursuing my dreams! I truly feel that if I were to be placed next to a model that is 6’0″ I could model just as well as they could! I do not think that models should be defined by their height. Height should not validate your modeling skills because there is so much more to it than just being tall. I believe that you have to also be able to communicate well with others, take direction, speak up for yourself, network, and be CONFIDENT, just to name a few qualities. Though I’m only 5’4″, I have gotten some amazing opportunities so far and I cannot wait to see what other blessings that God has in store for me and my modeling career. I have gotten the opportunity to do some commercial work for The Westin hotel in Nashville, I’ve partnered with brands, was in a music video or two, and my biggest accomplishment thus far: Winning the 2021 Maxim Covergirl title! All of this was not easy at all, but I know that modeling is something that I love doing and if I want to make this a full-time career then I have to keep pushing, no matter how hard it may get or how many people say “no.” I know that I can and will prove to anyone that ever doubted me that they were wrong. I have learned, with the help of God that with every “no” that I receive just means that that particular blessing was not meant for me. Any opportunity or blessing that is really and truly meant for me, cannot be taken from me. God is always on time, and his timing is always divine. I will continue to keep praying, working, and pouring into my cup until it overflows, while still supporting others and cheering them on as they move down their own paths.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a hard question for me because I am really a home body! I go out every now and again with friends but for the most part I am always at home, unless I’m working or doing a photoshoot. With that being said though, if I did have a friend come to town I would more than likely take them to a seafood spot, like Juicy Seafood or Seafood Sensations, or a BBQ spot because I love BBQ. I have not been to a lot of BBQ places here honestly, and when I find a place that I like, I tend to continue going to that same place. I enjoyed Famous Dave’s BBQ (there cornbread muffins are so good!) and I also Jack Cawthon’s BBQ. I also like pizza, so I would definitely have to take them to Slim and Husky’s for sure! As far as fun and interesting places, I like finding simple “hidden gems” so a place like Love Circle for a picnic would be a chill experience. It’s up on a tall hill and when the sky is clear you can have a nice view of the city. If you choose to go there early enough you can catch a beautiful sunrise, or sunset if you go later in the evening. Another good spot would be the Parthenon, where you could choose to tour it or simply walk around its outskirts near the water and all of the beautiful flowers. Whenever I do get out, I try to do different things and be outside instead of being cooped up inside of a building. Walking through the Gulch area is another place that I like to go, especially if I’m wanting to hop on an electric scooter! My new favorite spot is Cafe Intermizzo! It’s over near Hampton Social and it’s amazing. Anyone that might want to experience some night life may like going downtown to Broadway, and Demonbreun street also has some lit spots. I’m sure that there are a lot of other great places around, but those are just a few that I personally enjoy. I prefer the simple things.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to first GOD and then my amazing family and friends! I love them so much! Thank you for always supporting me and my dreams. I would also like to thank all of the creatives who I’ve worked with that believed in my craft and my mother agency, Premiere Models Nashville, for seeing my potential and bringing me onto their team.
