Meet Lamar Jackson | Owner of Play Action Soulfood and More

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lamar Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lamar, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
I wanted to create a lasting legacy. I wanted to start a restaurant with a welcoming environment for everyone — one that’s similar to how my home was growing up. There was a lot of love put into the food we had as kids. It’s important for me and my family to share our love for cooking, and to show everyone just how much love goes into what we do.

The end goal for us is to expand our brand all over the country. We want to be a nationally recognized franchise. We ultimately want to bring our food into all environments while still giving back to my community. When I was at home growing up, the fun and the stories behind food always made me want to tell others about my journey and experiences. So, I want people to experience that same love and joy I have with food.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I want people to know the things we value most about our brand are passion and authenticity. In order to maximize your success, you need passion in everything that you do. We genuinely love what we do in serving our community. There’s nothing fake about what we do or how we do it — and our customers know and appreciate that. Our food is authentic, and so is the experience you’ll have at our establishment.

You can’t be successful without having integrity, consistency and loyalty. We truly care about our customers, and always do the right things at all times. We pride ourselves on being consistent with the quality of our food, our presentation, and cleanliness. And we always show loyalty to our staff and our surrounding communities.

It’s important to know the more that is put on your plate, the more is required of you. The more you achieve, the more mountains you will have to climb. That’s what comes with being successful.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m a native of Pompano Beach, Florida. My mother raised the four of us — my younger brother and my two younger sisters. I remember coming into the kitchen to the smell of her cooking. Even until this day, she won’t let her recipes go. But she and my grandmother taught me everything I know in the kitchen. That’s why you can really taste the authenticity in our food, because it’s truly homemade. We even use fresh ingredients from local farms as well. So, it means a lot to me that I’m able to provide for my city.
