We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Layne Merck and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind Lauren Layne Swim began when I was a Lingerie and Swimwear model. I had been working in that part of the industry for 7 years. I always loved the companies and product I was modeling for but we always had to go through so many fittings before the actual photoshoot. I couldn’t understand why they were selling this post-production product, when it still wasn’t made correctly for women. That gave me the idea to start a swimwear company where the product actually fit and women would feel their best!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am most proud of the hard work I have put into this company. When I first had the idea to create a brand all I knew was that I liked fashion, and I knew how to sketch and sew. I decided to enrolled in classes at FIT in New York so I could learn the business side of fashion. From there I was lucky enough to find the best mentor, Rozana who helped me with my designs and fits. Having the proper education was extremely helpful when I came to finding the right manufacturing company, finances and making those big life changing decisions. I would highly recommend starting with schooling if you want to start your own company. With that being said, it still isn’t easy. You have to constantly be on top of everything and everyone making sure the smallest details are taken care of properly or it could ruin the entire collection. I think it is important for everyone to know how much of the company is truly me and not just another name placed on a brand.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Let girl’s weekend commence! First stop Mr. C’s hotel in Coconut Grove to check it. I personally love this hotel! The interior is decorated like a beautiful private mega yacht, which I think is the perfect vibe for a tropical weekend away.

A few things we will have on our itinerary while we’re in Miami are throwing on our LLSwim bikini and cover-up and head upstairs to Mr. C’s rooftop pool and bar where we’ll soak up the sun and have our afternoon rosé. Just a quick drive away we’ll hit Bal Harbour an beautiful outdoor mall with all the best boutiques, coffees shops and bakeries. It’s so much fun to spend the whole afternoon here walking around and shopping! The hotel overlooks the Marina were we can rent a boat and spend the day on the water. Last but not least we’ll head over to Super Blue for an immersive art experience that is out of this world!

Food is always a major part of my trips, I am a big foodie! So staying at Mr. C’s with Cipriani only a room service call away was an absolute must. Some of my other favorite local spots we will go to would be Drunken Dragon for Korean BBQ, Toni’s Sushi Bar (an all time fav), and Casa Tua.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to thank Rozana Paloka for being the best mentor a girl could ask for! Rozana is not only an incredible fashion designer with her own line, “Rozana Paloka” but she also helps run an the most delicious Italian restaurant in NY with her family called “Max”. She has taught me so much and for that I am forever grateful.
