We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Markwith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson my career has taught me is to never be afraid to speak up. Growing up I was taught to listen and not really ask questions. But I’ve learned that asking questions and using your voice is crucial in any aspect of your career or even life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My whole life I have been an athlete, I have played competitive soccer for the past 20 years of my life and recently I have transitioned to full time employee haha. Hanging up my cleats was extremely difficult for me, it was a transition that no one prepares you for. Fortunately I got a job at Inter Miami CF so soccer is still a huge part of my life. I am still involved in the game, just on the other side of the pitch. I am the Social Media Coordinator at Inter Miami CF, I am in charge of running the social media accounts for Fort Lauderdale CF and Inter Miami CF Academy and helping out with the first teams social media.
Being a female in the sports world is a challenge in itself. The sports industry is a male dominated field so being able to break into it, I feel extremely excited and blessed. I have learned many different lesson being a female in the industry. The most important one being, “always voice your opinions, and never apologize for asking questions.” This one took me a while to learn and become confident with, and I am still learning. Reading books, listening to podcasts, and speaking with female leaders has helped me grow as a female in the sports world.
My current job is in social media but my short term goal is to be the on air talent for a professional soccer team. Manifesting my dreams into reality is a huge thing for me and I recommend manifesting to anyone who has dreams and goals that they want to achieve.
I am excited to keep growing as a female in the sports world. I want young girls to know that they can achieve their goals and that no one should stop them from dreaming. I am obviously a huge advocate for women, and eventually I plan to start up a company to help girls and young women navigate their way in a career in sports.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
OOO I love this question. Living in Miami I feel like I am living the dreams. The location, the weather, the people, the cultures…Miami is an incredible place to call home. I would definitely start out by showing my friend Brickell! Brickell is where I live and it is basically like a mini city. They have yummy food, great drinks, fun music, everything you could ever want! In Brickell I would plan a late night dinner at La Mar, my favorite Peruvian dinner spot. It is right on the water so the view is spectacular!
Tuesday…I would rent some chairs at Fontainebleau and spend the day at the beach just soaking in the South Florida sun!
Wednesday, I would take my friend to The Design District. This area is filled with great shopping! I would definitely do dinner at Mandolin, a cute little greek spot that literally makes you feel like you are in Santorini Greece!
definitely be Wynwood! I absolutely love Wynwood, the vibe is so good! This area is up and coming and full of murals, art and music! I would have to eat dinner at this yummy Asian food hall called 1800 lucky. They have the best pork boa buns and sushi! After I would head over to Lagniappe, a wine and cheese heaven!
Friday, I would head to Key Biscayne and grab a bite to eat the best pizza place ever called Sir Pizza. It is totally a locals spot but it might be the best pizza in Miami! We would of course need to do happy hour and happy hour is always at the Wharf!
Saturday I would take my friend to an Inter Miami game! The games are so so fun, great food and drinks, amazing atmosphere and you get to watch soccer! If there was not a game that weekend I would definitely be a boat day! Boat days are huge in Miami! And at night we would have to go experience some of the Miami night life!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my story to my family. My family has always been my number #1 fan and biggest support system. I would not be where I am today and I would not be who I am today without them. Being half Guatemalan and half American I am proud to come from a mixed family. Growing up in a household that embraced both my ethnicities definitely contributed to the female I am today. Thank you mom, dad and Angela for all your love and support!
