We had the good fortune of connecting with Laurie Boge and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laurie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have been working in the medical field for over 20 years as an emergency medicine physician. Although I loved wearing scrubs, I did not love the way they fit. Scrubs were originally made for men in the operating rooms. I wanted to create a luxury medical apparel line for women in medicine to make them feel comfy chic, all while remaining functional, long-lasting, and machine washable. I truly believe when we feel and look good, we just do better. My line gives women a little extra confidence which makes all the difference.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am an emergency medicine physician and advocate for women in medicine. In 2021 I started an elevated medical apparel line for women named GreenCloud Apparel. Women in medicine are courageous and confident, we simply help them wear it. Our line is functional and chic, designed to turn a uniform multiform. All of our pieces mix and match with each other and look great in and out of the hospital setting.
The medical system was built by men, for men yet women today are the majority in healthcare. For example, women make up more than 50% of medical school students. Studies have shown women are more empathetic, have less negative surgical outcomes, connect better with patients. Training, compensation, working conditions and so much more needs to change to support women. GreenCloud is in the business of making the best scrubs that are both functional and stylish. GreenCloud is really in the business of bringing out and bringing up the courage and confidence of women in medicine. We support conferences that focus on leadership training for women. We highlight trailblazers in medicine. We give back as much as we can.
Nothing about starting a business is easy. But nothing really that means a lot to me in life has been easy. Staying humble and curious has helped me get to where I am. Learning my limitations and when to ask for help was also super important. I have a team of fiercely smart women who all believe in our vision and values.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Coconut Grove so I am a bit biased. We would start with a long run or bike ride to Key Biscayne then a class at PilatesOne then brunch at Sadelle’s. Next up would be shopping in the design district and a walk around Wynwood. Dinner would probably be back in the Grove at Amal or MintyZ. Early bedtime always! Luckily my friends get me.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The younger generation of women in medicine really inspired me to go after my crazy dream. I spent many years trying to be a part of the “boys club” in medicine, ignoring or laughing and rude remarks, always trying to avoid conflict. Younger women in medicine today don’t tolerate it. They really inspired me to go for it and create a line that would make you stand out, and hopefully stand up even more.
