We had the good fortune of connecting with Laydee Lyrix and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laydee, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
The most important decision which contributed to my success was to believe in my success. Being committed to healthy living, constant learning, and adaptability, I am a firm believer in creating your reality and manifesting what you want in life. You can do this by believing you already have it, for example, if you start your day with “I am winning” then you will win. If you focus on the barriers in your day, then you will be stuck in a proverbial psychological traffic jam. Quite a mouthful, even more so a mindful. It is the highest of vibrations and the most intense of emotions that take us to new levels in life, so the next time you feel like you’re down, get back up and reflect on rising above your previous position.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art has seen many phases but overall I have always gravitated toward the hip-hop community whether it be commercial or underground. In 2008 I got my first deliverance on the scene as a rap battler and definitely set out a lot of waves through that which I still don’t comprehend, It was at a time when the internet was just starting to become what it is today and I feel that it would’ve fast-tracked this journey a bit, however, I learned so much about myself, music and money during this time and the business as a whole. A very important lesson to know is to own as much of your work/ art as possible, too many get in bed with bad deals over not having money now, don’t ever rate your work out right to only be worth an estimated amount as copyright lasts 50 years last the last remaining member so a long time. I won’t bore you with all those logistics back to the art, last year while was attending college, I wrote and recorded my first studio album “Lifted” available on all major platforms such as Spotify, Apple music, and more. I felt this was a necessary move for my career to show labels of my adversity and tenacity. Most of all I wanted to outright own my first album so that way when I do start to take off I have some residuals if you feel me. It takes many layers to create a successful brand and style is one of them, you need to be a trendsetter and not blend into the crowd. I used to think it was my physical appearance that would do so but then I had a sudden shift in my heart when I began to shine from within and project light out for the fans. It is my greatest intention to tell my tale of a girl who went from living in the shadow of what way others saw her to living in her own truth and speaking it unapologetically. I am Laydee Lyrix, a mother, a rapper/singer/songwriter and I come from Niagara Falls, Canada.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I never go to Miami without hitting up my favorite recording studio in North beach, BayEight Studios. I also recommend eleven for nightlife. The Blackbird ordinary is also a good spot, if your looking for a hidden gem clive’s cafe in Little Haiti is also a spot to check out. The possibilities of specialty cuisine are endless in such a multicultural place, you can have anything from kosher to Caribbean, within a few blocks which is my favorite thing about Miami. Pair that with the streets being doused in color and art, the picturesque Oceanview background, and of course the weather, you have all my favorite things in one place. Along with DJ Khaled of course. cuz you can’t have Miami without the Khal!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
That goes without saying as it’s what keeps bringing me back to the states time and time again. Each time as a stronger and more established Artist/brand, Coast 2 Coast Live Showcases is my outlet as a Canadian musician who’s aspiring to obtain my performance visa and eventually move to Florida. With that being said I have had the opportunity to compete/perform on many stages like Miami, Orlando, Los Angeles, and more. I love to travel and envoke the culture that I observe, being a mixed indigenous and caucasian person, I often feel like I don’t fit anywhere so therefore I fit everywhere. I almost retired from music in 2017 due to a vocal chord injury, so this led to 2 years without singing a single note, that was until 2019. That was the beginning of a beautiful transformation in my life, my voice, and my lyrics. If you fast forward to 2022, I graduated from Seneca College for Songwriting and Performance, I have been enjoying being self-employed since November 2020, while pursuing this crazy rewarding experience of being an Artist/ Influencer.
