We had the good fortune of connecting with Leslie Pecoraro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leslie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
This is one of my favorite questions I get asked… What was your thought process in starting this business?
The interesting thing with MOTHERBOARD is how this business was created! There was absolutely NO thought behind it. The way it was created was unplanned!
My family and I were invited to a “Friendsgiving” get together. There was a sign up sheet for what we would bring to add to the food! I put no thought into writing in a “cheese board” didn’t want to put “charcuterie” board on there as not many people knew what that was!
Of course the day arrived and I was busy with the kids sports etc and rushing to get ready and with about half hour left to spare I whipped up one of my over generous sized charcuterie boards with all the best flavors, colors and textures of course!
I didn’t even have time to cover it in style, I laid a piece of tin foil on it!
Once arriving fashionable late to the party I made room for it on the table, pulled off the foil and walked away. The room literally went silent. Everyone gathered around and started going crazy over t, asking me questions about the flavors, the look of it, how long it took me etc! Then 2 people asked if thy could buy one from me! I just laughed.
A few days later someone posted a picture of my board on Facebook and it went viral. I jokingly shared the photo with the caption … “taking orders now!”
And within seconds my phone rang! And people started reaching out to place orders!
I didn’t even have time to map out a business plan… I just took the plunge and dive right into it! Taking one day at a time, learning as I went along…and here I am over 2 years later making Charcuterie Boards for South Florida to enjoy!! I love making every single board that goes out! Every board is unique and will never look the same!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Every MOTHERBOARD that goes out is filled with not only amazing flavors but lots of love and thought!
No MOTHERBOARD will ever look or taste the same, and that’s what sets me apart from the rest. Whoever knew there was such a thing as a “custom” charcuterie board! I add a special touch when needed to go with theme of the gathering, hearts for engagements, birthday names, birthday ages, wine glass for a virtual wine tasting or happy hours etc.
And of course I make candy boards, brunch boards, dessert boards, fruit boards! I love being creative With them all! And the brighter the colors the better!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Miami! I have to start off by saying that I’m an Italian Jersey girl! So good food is a must! And I’ll travel around to get it!
I will start off at Lucali for the most delicious pizza!!
Then of course now I need something sweet … so I’ll head over the iconic Joes Stone for the key lime pie & stone crabs!
I love the hotels that have been around forever – the Fontainebleau Hotel- is great for people watching and a great lobby bar!
I just love the vibe of Miami, the nonstop action, the beauty of the people and the buildings.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would especially love to give a shout out to my local community! I always say on My social media, I do not need followers from over seas… it’s the local love that keeps me going!
There is a community of Entrepreneurs that are Moms! They get it, they support each Other, sharing posts etc. It’s not easy juggling a small business & bring a mom! those are the ones that I need to really give a huge shout too!
