We had the good fortune of connecting with Lila Starlet and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lila, what are you inspired by?
I am inspired by various things but most of all glamour. I love the idea that glamour can be created and I love the DIY spirit behind burlesque. It’s very exciting to have an opportunity to be able to bring to life a fantasy in a glamorous way. It could be a simple idea such as being inspired by a bird and translating it into something showgirl and stage worthy with feathers and rhinestones and glitz and glam. I am inspired by the art of creation and I am driven to bring fantasy to the audience to leave them awed and dreaming. I am also inspired by Old Hollywood movies. Most impactful for me are the beautiful technicolor musicals as well as the underwater spectacles as performed by Esther Williams.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My style of performing is very glamorous and classic. I am most proud of my creativity in executing the concepts of my acts and my dedication to glamour. My costumes are of the most decadent and dedicated to glamour with thousands of crystals upon them. Some lessons I’ve learned along the way have been supporting other burlesque artists and working together to keep the standard of our industry elevated and respected.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love showing my friends a lot of the glamorous spots in town. A local favorite is the Mai Kai in Fort Lauderdale. I also love Vizcaya and Spanish Monastery for the architecture and history. The Everglades is also fun to visit because it is such a unique ecosystem to only Florida and it’s good to learn about nature and the preservation of this delicate ecosystem. Some of the most fun interesting places are the ones that hold history and have character.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to recognize the burlesque community in South Florida for standing in solidarity and supporting and empowering each other in our endeavors. We work together to make it a great place to perform and encourage each others individuality and creativity in creating beautiful acts for our audience. Also, recognition is owed to all the burlesque Legends who came before us and paved the way for this beautiful art form.
