We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsey Burda and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lindsey, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It really all started with being surrounded by other small business owners and entrepreneurs. I’ve always admired those working hard to accomplish their goals. I too had that same drive to accomplish my own.
For a decade, I was working as VP in the corporate world where I built a full-service marketing department for small businesses from the ground up. “We like working with you because you GET US,” I would hear. I didn’t feel like I was anything special. I just listened.

And through listening, I quickly realized that many small businesses were experiencing the same frustrations when it came to marketing their businesses; time and budget and someone who truly took the time to understand their needs. Their only option for quality ongoing attention was either hire in-house for full-time professional management or outsource to an agency for short-term projects.. There was no in between. Small businesses were often being taken advantage of and I was not ok with that!

And then I realized, why the heck didn’t I start my own business sooner?! I wanted to help more businesses in this way.

What should our readers know about your business?
I created Burda Marketing to help other small businesses grow their passions. I work with businesses who are passionate about what they do and want to make a difference in the lives of their own clients. I help them build a strong digital presence to bring more awareness to their businesses so they can do more of what they love.

I actually started my career in music, something I was passionate about, and it taught me so much about personal branding and marketing. I then studied communications in college and then worked in marketing for over a decade in the corporate world. I started to recognize that same passion I had had for music in all these small business owners. And I knew I wanted to do more to help. So, I started my own business. After feeling extremely undervalued and unappreciated, at my old job where I was VP of marketing, I quit to start my own business where I get to help passionate business owners every day. The joy in their voices, the appreciation in their thank you’s, the excitement they have for what’s next… it’s what I live for!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love nature and a good hike or bike ride any day is great or exploring new towns and soaking in any small-town charm. Though I do tend to pick places out of the way – way out of the way. I love to travel and I have dragged friends and family with me all over the world. I’ve been to Canada, Iceland, (I love the cold weather), France, Luxembourg, Germany and Switzerland, and throughout many states in the US. I rarely stay local when looking for an adventure, I like to see as many new places as I can and meet people from all walks of life.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I literally worked inside a small corporate bubble for years. I had little support or recognition from colleagues there, they didn’t seem to see the value, no follow through. But fortunately others did – All those clients I had helped, gave me purpose to keep improving and working harder because their passion for their own businesses was just so contagious I just wanted to help more people like that. So, I kept on going and when the time was right I started my own business. In that process, I found an amazing online marketing community. I was shocked at the support and encouragement and friendships that formed so quickly. I felt more appreciation for my work in just the span of one year than I had ever felt before in my entire career. My skills, and talent and ideas were validated. On top of that I continue to learn so much from this community every day. We can always be improving and adapting and I cannot say enough great things about the marking community online.
