We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsey Chastain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lindsey, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was around eight years old, when I wrote my first book, a collection of very bad poems about baby animals. Since then, I’ve studied, taught, and practiced the craft of writing. Starting a business was also always appealing to me. I loved the idea of being my own boss and being the catalyst for my own success. I tried several ventures throughout the years, but nothing really worked until I sat down and focused in on my strengths. My business was founded on two major principles, play to my strengths and use my strengths to play. The Writing Detective was founded to capitalize on what I’m great at while providing an opportunity to consistently learn new things and hear new stories.

What should our readers know about your business?
The Writing Detective is a combination of several types of businesses. We are a little but SEO and content marketing, a. little bit social media marketing, and a lot of storytelling. What sets the company apart is we realize that digital marketing, content marketing and social media marketing are all interconnected. Instead of focusing on just one element of marketing or content creation, we look at the overall picture to uncover what makes your personal brand, your business, or your story truly unique. Then, we help you share it through the power of the written word.

I’m proud that we have been able to help some small, medium, and even a large business or two increase their digital footprints and find their voice in the crowded internet landscape. Everyone has a story. Everyone is interesting, and it is my privilege to work with people every day who share their stories with me and trust that I will help them present the best version of themselves and their business to their community or world.

It wasn’t easy to get to this point. I tried on a lot of different hats first. From delivering singing telegrams in college to teaching college, to journalism, to today has been a long, difficult, but fun journey.

The most important lesson I’ve learned is not to take yourself or failure too seriously. Everyone fails. Everyone falters. It’s those that keep trying that succeed.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am the textbook definition of an introvert. I would start by spending a day on my little farm. We would hang out with the chickens and ducks to learn important life lessons like sometimes, you need to call out to let people know what they need is in your direction and other times, you just need to chase a butterfly.

We would visit every used bookstore in town and try to find older editions of books that have annotations already written in them and then continue that conversation with the precious readers in the margins.

We would soak up some art and people watch. Basically, we would have a very relaxing time filling our minds with the beauty this world has to offer.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my husband, Ryan, for his unfaltering belief that I am the best at everything I do.
