We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Snyder and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
When my parents died from cancer 5 years apart, I decided to put life’s pleasures and passions on the front burner. It became clear to me as a 20-something that our time is precious and how we spend it here matters deeply. There is no reason why we can’t live our lives to the fullest.

I began to take more career risks, which included leaving a comfortable job at a production company in manhattan to start my own web design business. I haven’t had a guaranteed paycheck since 2006! I also haven’t had to work for anyone else other than myself since then, either.

When I came up with the idea of Tokeativity in 2015, I didn’t know how it was going to play out, I just knew it was something that needed to be born. When I met my business partner Samantha, who had already been hosting cannabis consumption events in her home, I knew this was the perfect risk taker to match my desire and ability to take risks.

Jan 15, 2017, we launched a consumption friendly events series for women in Portland, Oregon, which quickly sold out. We continued to host events at Sam’s house monthly, living on the edge of a grey, undefined area of where consumption events and what was or could be considered “legal” were at the forefront.

The risks paid off, as we quickly built a local, state, national and international community of cannabis loving women and Tokeativity became much more than an events series. It is now a global community to which we have expanded to offer creative agency services celebrating 5 years in business!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Tokeativity are the largest cannabis feminist community in the world with a network of over 56,000 cannabis consumers and business owners that believe in cannabis normalization, equity and empowerment of a modern consumption culture. We connect through creative, social, and political, intersectional feminist forward activities and creative campaigns that work to create radical, positive change.

We’ve hosted over 350 events since Jan 2017, built and launched our own membership platform in 2018 after getting kicked off Eventbrite and successfully pivoted 100% to digital events in March 2020. We’re incredibly proud of our ability to pivot and roll with the times. It has directly correlated to our ongoing success.

It has not been easy. We have been able to achieve this 5 year milestone by believing in ourselves first, continuing to align with our vision, and the support of our cannabis loving feminist community.

We want the world to know you can do anything you put your mind to if you believe in yourself, and work completely from a place of love. Everything else will follow, because you will be so solid inside yourself no one can shake you.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out to a few individuals who have helped make my risk taking more accessable:

My wife, Cat, for her love and support for all of my creative endeavors, especially Tokeativity since it’s inception. For all the times I spent working instead of playing and all those times keeping an eye at the door.

My business partner, Samantha Montanaro, who is the other parent to our Tokeativity baby. Her support, vision, endurance, and loyalty have given Tokeativity the grounded spirit it needed to survive and thrive.

Leah Maurer, an incredible cannabis advocate and first official Tokeativity speaker who showed up, supported, shared and preached about Tokeativity from Day 1.

Sara Batterby, who left this world last year but supported me and the vision of Tokeativity, provided the mentorship I needed to really believe what was possible.

My friends Caryn and Sara who supported me for a year and a half talking about how “I think I might want to start this Tokeativity thing” and to Caryn for DJing and helping to create the vibe of so many Tokeativity events.

Our Tokeativity HQ team, Casey Wiser, Wendy Mintey, Nickia Delaware, Heather James and Jasmine Perry for your support of the Tokeativity vision and helping make our collective dreams a reality!

And to my parents, who lovingly support and guide me on my path from the other side.
