We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Toohey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I first moved to Charlotte and found myself in a position I despised, I realized that I needed to take control of my career path. The idea of purchasing an existing business didn’t resonate with me, and it became apparent that there was a gap in the market for cake artists in the Charlotte area. Encouraged by my husband’s suggestion, I swiftly took action, securing a commercial kitchen space and establishing valuable industry connections. My decision to start my own business stemmed from a desire for autonomy, creative fulfillment, and the opportunity to fill a niche in the local market. Thus, in September 2001, I founded my cake artistry business, driven by passion and determination.

Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My journey in the world of cake artistry began with a foundation in culinary arts, graduating from the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, VT. For around five years, I honed my skills as a Pastry Chef working in resorts and private clubs, crafting plated desserts and curating dessert buffets for banquets. While wedding and celebration cakes were part of my repertoire, the idea of transitioning to a “cake-only” business initially filled me with trepidation. What sets my cake artistry apart is a blend of technical expertise, creativity, and a commitment to personalized service. Each creation is infused with a touch of culinary finesse developed through years of experience in the industry. My background in pastry arts equips me with a diverse skill set, allowing me to translate clients’ visions into stunning edible masterpieces.
What excites me most about my work is the opportunity to bring joy and beauty to life’s special moments. Whether it’s a wedding, birthday, or milestone celebration, I take pride in crafting cakes that not only taste exquisite but also serve as a reflection of my clients’ personalities and the significance of the occasion.
However, the journey to where I am today was not without its challenges. Transitioning from a diverse pastry chef role to specializing in cakes required a leap of faith. I grappled with doubts and insecurities—What if someone requested a design beyond my capabilities? What if I couldn’t meet their expectations?Yet, it was precisely these uncertainties that propelled me forward. With each challenge encountered, I embraced a mindset of continual learning and growth. I sought inspiration from fellow artisans, experimented with new techniques, and invested in refining my craft. Through perseverance and determination, I discovered the resilience within myself to overcome obstacles and emerge stronger on the other side.
Of course, aesthetics are just one aspect of my craft; taste is equally important. My background in pastry arts gives me a competitive edge in creating and refining flavors. Whether it’s a showstopping cake or a decadent dessert display, I pride myself on offering a wide variety of styles and flavors to cater to every client’s palate.
As for what I want the world to know about me and my brand—it’s a story of passion, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence. Behind every cake I create lies a dedication to craftsmanship, a reverence for tradition, and a commitment to exceeding expectations. My mission is simple: to create unforgettable experiences, one slice of cake at a time.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A week-long adventure in Charlotte with one of my out-of-town friends would be so much fun! We’d kick off our exploration with a day in uptown and Southend, starting with a delectable brunch at Church and Union. After fueling up, we’d hop on the light rail to Southend for some shopping and people watching. Back uptown, we’d indulge in craft cocktails at Sophia’s Lounge before embarking on a unique tour with the Funny Bus, a blend of comedy, history, and sightseeing. We’d cap off the evening with dinner at Fin & Fino, ordering “The Treatment” for the full experience.

The next day, we’d head to the U.S. National Whitewater Center for an action-packed day of rafting, ziplining, and rock climbing with an all-day pass. We’d refuel with a delicious lunch at one of the on-site eateries, and if we’re lucky, catch an outdoor concert in the evening.

Another day would take us to Belmont for a tranquil retreat at Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens, where we’d marvel at the stunning orchid conservatory. We’d enjoy a leisurely lunch at Sammy’s in downtown Belmont before diving into more shopping in the afternoon.

Camp North End, a newly renovated area, would be next on our list. We’d explore the eclectic/artsy buildings filled with quirky shops and eateries, making sure to stop by Wentworth & Fenn, a delightful bakery owned by a friend, for coffee and pastries.

Weather permitting, we’d spend a day on Lake Norman or Mountain Island Lake, relishing in water sports and scenic walking trails during the summer months.

For a change of scenery, we’d venture to some of my favorite mountain towns like Hendersonville, Asheville, or Blowing Rock, each offering unique attractions, culinary experiences, and cultural immersion within a short drive.

With so much to see and do, a week in Charlotte would fly by in a whirlwind of excitement and adventure!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe a heartfelt shout-out to my husband, whose unwavering love, encouragement, and belief in my talent gave me the courage to pursue my entrepreneurial dream. His steadfast support, both emotionally and financially, was the cornerstone of my journey in starting and growing my business. Without him by my side, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to take that leap of faith, and for that, I am forever grateful.

I also want to extend a special shout-out to my mom, whose generosity and support were instrumental during the early stages of my business journey. She graciously opened her home to us while we were getting settled in a new city and searching for our own place to call home. Her unwavering encouragement and understanding provided a stable foundation as I embarked on the exciting yet challenging path of entrepreneurship. I am truly grateful for her love, kindness, and belief in my dreams.
