We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Mendoza and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Liz, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to create a business where people could go to pamper themselves while also improving their skin from harsh environments, natural elements, common toxins, and other everyday stressors. By creating a skincare clinic that would not only target one type of clientele but rather all skin types and their conditions, it would welcome those that had never gotten a facial before but truly needed one. Indeed, the foundation of my business model is helping others in their skincare journey. Along with this concept, I was a new mom during the pandemic and wanted flexibility to be with my girls. Though it was a risk to allocate my funds to this entrepreneurial project, it made the most sense professionally, economically, and personally. With this in mind, I knew that if I intended to give the best service with optimal results, I would be able to retain and expand repeat customers–a sign that I was on the right path in leaving my former profession and attaining financial independency in a field I am passionate about.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always enjoyed being productive and expanding my professional development in more than one field. Right out of college, I became a middle school math teacher and worked weekends at the most prestigious condominiums in South Florida. Though I had majored in Hospitality Management and was able to advance in this field, I had explored the beauty industry and dedicated a few hours a week to practicing permanent makeup. In order to maximize my salary at my day job, I decided to get my master’s degree in Education, specifically curriculum instruction for bilingual students, while still working 7 days a week. However, I ultimately hit a wage ceiling in my teaching profession after a few short years; therefore, I made the transition to the hospitality industry and started working at high-end spas to perfect my craft in staff training, client management, and beauty services. Though I continued offering treatments outside my working hours to my own customers, I was recruited to manage a reputable, highly luxurious condominium that involved high-profile residents. I enjoyed my role very much but when the pandemic hit, I was forced to stay home after my maternity leave since my position could not be done remotely. I thought about my options, and I knew it was time to start The Skin Code.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting the area, I would take them to typical Miami tourist spots such as Bayside, South Beach, and the FTX arena for a concert or basketball game. To eat and drink we would go to a Cuban diner in Hialeah called Chico’s, or some Haitian food at a small mom & pop shop called L’Auberge. Other less casual options would include Le Chick, Komodo, and the newest popular spot called Sexy Fish for an “underwater meal.” To hang out, we would walk around Ocean Drive, Wynwood, and Brickell to enjoy a drink at the rooftop bar Rosa Sky.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout author of The Secret, Ms. Rhonda Byrnes. I had an inclination to the idea that we are co-creators on this earth. Each of us being the architect of our life due to our actions and words–all deriving from our thoughts. But her book and documentary solidified these ideas and led me to confidently believe in the law of attraction. I have employed affirmations, visualizations, and other tactics to manifest my achievements and success. At the very least, it helps with introspection and keeping a positive outlook on life.
