We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, why did you pursue a creative career?
I realized early on I had a creative mind and always leaned more towards the arts. At a young age scary movies would scare me till I realized it was just makeup. I literally ran out of the movie theater while watching nightmare on elm street. I then watched the making of Freddy Kruegers makeup. It was at that moment I realized I not only wanted to see all horror movies but to be a part of creating those monsters. My love for creating characters became a reality when I would create my Halloween costumes as a kid. I was able to construct from my imagination and make it a reality. While working as a face painter that love grew larger because I found the art of transformation. I could transform others into anything they wanted to be. I found my passion. My passion to express myself through the art of makeup. I also love to inspire others. Knowing I can help or inspire at least one person also makes what I do worth while. It is like a positive chain reaction you create. Changing and inspiring one life can lead to millions of others lives being changed.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My favorite part about the art of makeup is the transformation process. I love to see an actor/model go through a dramatic change in appearance and fully embodying the character I’ve created. The actor/model can take on a whole new persona and sense of confidence because they can see and feel the change through the quality of the makeup. I take pride in being able to take a character from concept to creation using various methods and skills. Skills such as character design, casting, sculpting, molding, application, airbrushing and various makeup techniques. I’ve worked many hours on these skills while paying close attention to detail. What I think sets me apart from some artists is my versatility of skill sets. I truly enjoy working with all these methods. I have experience in lab work, costume design, foam fabrication, working on set, esthetics, teaching, and face/ body painting. Through out this journey I’ve learned many lessons and continue to learn more each day. One lesson I will always continue to use was taught to me by one of my inspirational instructors Charisma. They told me if a project is beginning to become overwhelming, first start with prioritizing, what’s the most integral part of your character? Start there and do one thing at a time. Second, remember the joy of creation seeing your character come to life and just have fun. This advice has helped me overcome my lack of confidence at times. The fear that the outcome will not live up to my past accomplishments. But remembering to breathe and go back to the reason why I love the power of makeup has continued to propel me through any challenge that comes my way. I love where my journey has taken me so far and look forward to what the future holds.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have a strong love for the arts, music, dance, and nature. One of the first stops would have to be wynwood. In wynwood there are so many opportunities to enjoy art from the many galleries to simply just the murals displayed on the buildings. Wynwood also has amazing night life with many restaurants, lounges, and bars that have outdoor spaces where you can dance the night away. Another stop would have to be Lips. It’s the ultimate in drag dining in FT Lauderdale. It’s such a fun experience where the top drag queen’s performances and makeup are always so stunning and impressive. I am also a mom to two amazing children so I love to do activities with them. We love to go to Hollywood beach where you can enjoy the beauty of Florida’s beaches, but also you can skate, bike, or ride foot pedal buggies along the beach boardwalk. The children’s museum and frost museum are also great choices. Lastly Miami water sports complex is one of our regular outdoor activities. It’s a cable park where you can wakeboard and have an environmentally conscious, family friendly experience.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am very fortunate to have an extremely supportive family and group of friends in my life. Growing up my mom would always support me in what I wanted to pursue even if that changed often. My husband encourages me everyday and continues to be my reminder that no matter what comes our way we can get through it as a team. I appreciate everything you do for me and our children I love you! My amazing group of friends who push me, support me, and are always there to lift me up. Melissa Munn owner of NYCs premier face and body painting company has not only believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself but has been a mentor and a great friend. I am so thankful to have each and every one of you in my life. Thank you!
