We had the good fortune of connecting with Lorena Sauer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lorena, how do you think about risk?
I think about risk as new opportunities and beginnings. I have moved many times, left my country (Argentina) with a law degree and a huge passion for art and design. When in NY I decided to pursue my passion leaving my career behind and went for my Interior Design Degree. After 13 years, I moved to Chile (lived there for 6 years) and two years ago moved to Miami. My risk taker personality has helped me adapt and reinvent myself to new places and clienteles. I am open minded about change and I am always ready to act. The uncertainty about the outcome doesn’t scare me, it challenges me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Miami has become a super exciting and fun cosmopolitan city to visit. It has grown a lot culturally offering many things to do besides the beaches, shopping and nightlife, that was always the motivation that brought tourists to the “Magic city”. I like taking visitors to the different neighborhoods to show them how different cultures coexist and take them to try different restaurants. Also, my favorite topic, is to take them to the new art museums, and galleries. There are very important art collectors that have opened their doors to the public.
Miami is very rich culturally, and has a lot of young up-and-coming artists with different backgrounds and also a lot of art collectors and that make it such a unique city.

Also, its design and architecture is something that I like to show the visitors. How it has grown architecturally, from the Art Deco style to the new high-rises.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Three people that crossed my life have made a huge impact on who I am today.

First, is my high school teacher that through his slideshows and teachings helped me understand history through the “eyes” of art. He opened up my mind to understand different styles, taking into account their context and era.

Secondly, my photography teacher, through my last years of high school and first years of law school, helped sharpen my eyes and taught me to see through what’s visible and look for every detail in a composition. I think my “critical eye” comes from those days of analyzing famous photographers work with him.

Lastly, and probably the most important person that marked me as an adult reinventing myself in a new place, with a new language, and a new career, was my professor at Parsons School of Design: Louise Devenish. Coming from a lawyer background, never had I academically studied design, but Professor Devenish instilled in me the confidence and drive to find ” the designer within me” to strive academically within one of the most prestigious design schools in the world.
