We had the good fortune of connecting with Loretta Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Loretta, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I was raised to always remember that a smile costs nothing. I always smile when I come into eye contact with people or meet people for the first time. Its leaves a lasting impression and you don’t know how much of difference you are going to make to a persons day. So for me its all about good positive energy and that energy could be via WhatsApp but its always picked up by the receiver, regardless. Second to this is supporting others and not necessarily for money. This combined with good energy has enabled me to create a network of artists that trust me and compliment me on my efforts to help them reach places they may have not been able to do so otherwise due to common factors such as lack of confidence, knowledge, skills but mainly, money. The gratitude alone is very rewarding. Having this type of disposition has brought me into contact with some really great people from different walks of life who have equally taught me a thing or two.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Currently I am working as a music promotor, promoting upcoming dancehall/reggae artists and helping their music to reach a wider audience. I also work in the music production field and I’m fortunately also a web and graphic designer which is extremely beneficial as the work goes hand in hand. Getting to where I am today has not been an easy ride. Its took a lot of trial and error, time and money wasting and many late nights and as a mum, early mornings. I have always been fortunate to have the support of my family who have always been there, mentally, emotionally and financially. Backing me up whenever I felt overwhelmed and deflated. Before coming to the obvious realization that music (my passion) was my route I opened and closed a couple of ventures, I guess mainly because my heart wasn’t fully there. You have to have a burning passion for what you do, for it to not feel like work and to plough through the workload and sacrifices that sometimes need too be made. As hard as the challenges may haver been I never took my eyes of the prize and always try to see challenges as an opportunity to grow. I believe I have reached this far from just being a hard working, genuine person who is often willing to set aside my own to help others. This attitude has enabled me to reach many great people, gain work and friendships further afield which has in turn helped me to help many more people so its a win win.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a great night out you cant beat central London as it just has everything you could possibly imagine on offer. For me personally, I would be eating out at every opportunity. I just love to experience food from different cultures. I love a full English breakfast but ultimately Indian (British favourite) will always be my number one but I quite literally will try most foods. A central London favorite of mine is Yo Sushi which is a modern Japanese restaurant where food circulates on a conveyer belt and you can help yourself, as well as order. Then there’s the Sports Bar for drinks and music, tourist attractions such as The London Dungeon if you like a bit of history and being scared by gruesome sights, hands and things appearing out of nowhere.. When I worked in Central London, I used to relax down Old Street in the city after work which is also a great place to hang out. Eat, drink and music. Doesn’t get much better than this for me.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have always had a huge passion for music in general and as much as I appreciate my life’s journey and the jobs I have done, I was never satisfied with working for someone else. I always had this desire to do something great, whereby I was not only helping myself but I was helping others to reach their goal and believe it or not it took me years to work out what it was I really wanted to do, even though the answer was literally staring right at me. To cut a long story story short, it finally became apparent that it was music that I had loved from a child. My youngest daughter who is now 13 said, “mum, start a TikTok page”. I have to say I was reluctant as I thought I was too old for TikTok but ended up doing so anyway after much persuasion and to my surprise at the time, it has been a great success. In addition to this I met a lady on TikTok called Natalie, from Music Fah Life. She had been promoting music for many years and was experienced in doing so, so I reposted a couple of her videos to my audience and it went on from there to be honest. We supported each others work and eventually she asked me to join her and Selector UK Rondon on their Radio Show on RTM Radio and the rest is history. I’m not currently doing the show but I am still a part of the team and we are all really good friends who continue to assist and support each others work. So my shout out is to my daughter Chay and Natalie to whom I am most grateful for helping me realise and kickstart my lifelong passion which has led to more great ventures. I also want to shout out my two eldest children for always supporting and believing in me.
