We had the good fortune of connecting with Lucia Serje and Maria Zegarra and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lucia and Maria, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The beauty about our agency is that there was not an initial intention to create a business. We each decided to use our social media and marketing skills to help local small business owners in Miami pivot to digital at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Brick and mortar stores were being closed and we wanted to give back. Once the word spread, we decided to tag team on our clients and that is when we decided to start a business built on helping small business owners thrive online. We were doing what we love, we just decided to give it a name: Lumar.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our business turned a year old earlier this year and we could not be happier! We were able to succeed through hard work and time management. We both have full-time jobs in addition to this agency so having dedicated days and times to do the work is what helps us. What sets us apart is that we are flexible. We are there for our clients through text, phone calls and emails 24/7 while most agencies have set hours. We are also big on creating personal relationships with our clients, whether it’s texting our client good luck on an upcoming school exam to sending them cookies on Christmas.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being in South Florida makes it extremely difficult to just pick a handful of places to go to during a week’s visit but every good vacation starts with delicious food. Our favorite dinner spots in Miami are Prime 112, Chi, Komodo, Papi Steak, Kiki on The River, and many others but of course, we must also indulge in our favorite local Miami Lakes spots of Latin America on 154th for an amazing pan con bistec and un sancocho from Don Pan on 67th. If you visit Miami, you have to go to Wynwood and explore both the nightlife and the beautiful art and that will take a day or two. Finally, it’s only right we also explore Fort Lauderdale and do some day drinking at The Wharf before going to visit some of our amazing clients at Booze Garden and Sway. We can’t leave Fort Lauderdale without strolling down to Las Olas and enjoying some more yummy food and cocktails while enjoying the great weather. As we said, it’s hard to pick only a handful of things to do and places to go!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We want to shout out our families. The success of this agency was not because of chance or luck. It is nothing but a byproduct of the hard work and sacrifices of our parents who worked hard to give us a better life and opportunities. Thank you for your love and support!
