We had the good fortune of connecting with Lucy Patane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lucy, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Improvised music makes me very happy. I feel that contrary to the world, it is something that happens only once, since the next second it ceased to exist, without any type of productive utility and those who are part of it, their minds and actions are only connected in the present. It makes me happy to be part of that event.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I always thought of music as something serious in my life. Not having studied at any university, self-management was my school. I had my first band when I was 9 years old and from then on I never stopped. I played bass and we did covers, my bandmates were between 11 and 12 years old. I can proudly say that at one of the concerts we did they paid us with milkshakes! Then with my bands I always tried that independence would also mean economic independence. I was working as a session player on some projects and that’s how I started.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Any inhabitant of planet Earth must know Argentine Patagonia, one of the most beautiful places in our country. Especially Meliquina, a town where there is no electricity service and you can swim in its very cold lagoons and catch some trout by hand. It is one of the most important freshwater reserves and we must take care of and defend it. Activist tourism is a good way to get to know places.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think the first person I have to name is Richard Patane, my father. Also my mother Marcela Espadero and my sister Ana Patane. The amount of music that was heard in my house when I was a child was enormous. There was also art in the air, with my dad’s photographs and drawings, rehearsals with his band, etc. Then my musical education was to play a lot. With bands, with friends, with colleagues, with different formations and styles ranging from hardcore to country. To name a few people: Paula Maffia, Pablo Hadida, Diego Frenkel, Nahuel Briones, Pedro Bulgakov.
