We had the good fortune of connecting with Luis Maroto, Esq. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Luis, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I believe unequivocally that the reason I am where I am today is the result of constantly pushing myself to step outside of my comfort zone. When you step outside of your comfort zone you begin to learn things about yourself that you may not have otherwise known. Outside of your comfort zone is where true growth happens. I wanted to be a Lawyer since I was about ten because I wanted to make a difference. I wanted to be the voice for those who felt they did not otherwise have one. Unfortunately, one of my biggest fears has always been public speaking (how ironic). I was one the students who dreaded the days when they had to speak in front of the class. I was that student who got nauseous before his class presentations. But I knew what I wanted in life, and I refused to let my fears get in the way. So, what did I do? I took every speech class I could to force myself to speak in front of a class. I signed up for the classes where I would be forced to speak in front of an audience. I interned at law offices where I knew I would be in court speaking. I took every opportunity I could to improve my public speaking and I hated every step of the way. But as time went on, it became a little easier and eventually I started to notice improvements and slowly but surely, I started to develop confidence in myself and my ability to speak in front of others. What initially started as something I was terrified of slowly became something I not only grew to love but became passionate about. If I could get one point across to anyone it would be not to allow yours fears to get in the way of your goals.
What should our readers know about your business?
My first job as a Lawyer was practicing criminal defense at the Broward County Public Defender’s Office in Fort Lauderdale, FL. However, after almost three years there, I recently transitioned over to practicing civil law and now work as a Personal Injury Lawyer at Keller, Keller, Caracuzzo, Cox & Belluccio, a law firm in West Palm Beach, FL. We represent those who have been injured throughout the state of Florida. I am truly grateful to work at such an amazing firm that has like-minded people who care about what they do and the difference they are making in the lives of others. Here at Keller, Keller, Caracuzzo, Cox & Belluccio, we put the clients first, always. We are there for our clients every single step of the way and they know when they need something, we are there for them. We believe that our clients should be able to have access to their Lawyer and speak to them when they need to, so each client is provided with the personal cell number of their Lawyer so that when they need to speak with them, they can. But my favorite thing about this office is when we say we put our clients first, we mean it.
In Florida, attorney fees in personal injury cases are on a contingency basis. What that means is that unless the Lawyer recovers an amount for the client, the client owes $0 in fees. However, if the lawyer does recover an amount, they are then entitled up to a certain percentage. What a lot of people do not realize is that those fees are the first thing that come off that recovered amount and before the client receives their portion. Additionally, there are often medical bills that must be paid first before the client even sees a check. This can often result in the Lawyer making more money than the injured client. Here, we do not believe that is right, so if our fees are ever higher than what our clients are recovering, we literally reduce our fees and put that money into our clients’ pockets instead. I could not have asked for a better firm to work at and it is a beautiful thing to be excited to go to work every day.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Wynwood would be a must. There is such a variety of food, drinks, and the best thing there–the art! I could spend an entire day here easily walking around and looking at the art. I’m also a big fan of the Perez Art Museum and the Frost Museum of Science. But one of the best things about Miami in general is the food. One of my favorite places right now to eat would have to be Cote Miami. If you are big on steak, you will not go wrong with this restaurant.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Father, who has been a West Palm Beach Police Officer for over 26+ years. Without him, I truly would not be where I am at today, let alone a Lawyer. Life is very hard, and I believe everybody needs at least one person to help guide them and steer them in the right direction in this crazy world. As a child, he instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility of service to others. A desire to help those that you can. That responsibility and desire still resonate with me today and was the impetus for deciding to become a Lawyer. It is what keeps me going on the days I want to stop and what gives me the strength to persevere even when the odds seem stacked against me. My father showed me that by helping others you are also helping yourself.
