We had the good fortune of connecting with Lup Cheung and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lup, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Coming from a Chinese household where stability is often prized, choosing to open an ice cream shop was a big leap. I view risk as an essential, calculated, part of growth and innovation. In my career, taking risks has involved stepping out of the comfort zone of a traditional path, investing in a business that reflects my personal vision, and constantly experimenting with new ideas to stay relevant in a competitive market.

What should our readers know about your business?
Opening my ice cream shop in 2019, just a year before the COVID-19 pandemic, was a huge challenge. During the lockdown, my shop remained open as an essential business. For the first 4.5 months I was managing the shop and customers by myself, from open to close. This period reinforced the importance of resilience and adaptability in business.

The journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been incredibly rewarding. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is the power of perseverance and the importance of directly connecting with customers. My goal is for the world to recognize my brand for its quality products and its resilience.

What sets my brand apart in this competitive market is our unwavering focus on quality and exceptional customer service. Despite the tough times, especially during the pandemic, maintaining high standards for our products and ensuring each customer has a memorable experience have been our key priorities. These principles have not only helped us weather the storm but also carved out a distinct identity for my brand.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I consider myself a foodie! My ideal week with a best friend visiting town would focus on diverse culinary experiences and local attractions. We’d enjoy brunching by the water, explore downtown, dine at farm-to-table restaurants showcasing the best of Palm Beach’s vibrant and diverse food scene. Some of my favorite restaurants include Buccan, Fern Street, Lynora’s, Elisabetta’s and Howley’s.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents, as dedicated restaurant owners, instilled in me the essence of hard work and the importance of family. These values have been the cornerstone of my journey as an ice cream shop owner.
