We had the good fortune of connecting with Lynn Morgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lynn, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
Most of my inspiration has come from my travels. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to travel to many parts of the world. Because I’ve lived in Florida for most of my life, I often want to travel to places that don’t look anything like Florida! The only problem with that is that art buyers here in Florida seem to want paintings of palm trees, waves, etc.

Also, I’ve always loved abstract art, but I found it very difficult to do. When COVID kept us all at home, I decided to try an entirely new medium (Oil and cold wax) and concentrate on abstract and non-objective paintings. I find my inspiration for these paintings by looking at the work of the abstract artists that I admire. Now I am teaching others how to delve into abstraction. My students all agree: Creating a good abstract painting is more difficult than creating a more realistic work.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My media seems to be what sets me apart. I am often the only pastel artist in the shows in which I exhibit. Since I have started doing abstract oil and cold wax paintings, I seem to be the only local oil painter using cold wax. In addition to the media, my style has become recognizable, whether it be my somewhat abstracted landscape and figurative paintings, my very abstract figure paintings or my non-objective paintings. What is exciting me right now is creating multi-layered abstract figures with the added dimension of cold wax.

When I retired from the corporate world, I knew I wanted to become a full-time artist, expanding on what had been a lifelong hobby. I told myself that I would not fail for lack of trying. It has never been easy, and there are still discouraging moments and disappointments. But artists must always remember that art is completely subjective, and you can’t let these disappointments get you down. You just have to keep doing it!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First, I would bring them to the Palm Room Art Gallery & Artisans Boutique! Then we would have to visit downtown Stuart and eat at any one of the fabulous restaurants there. I guess I have to say The Gafford is my favorite downtown restaurant. We would also have to eat at District Table and browse around the watering holes in Port Salerno. My favorite outdoor activity is sailing, which is top notch in Stuart. I crew almost every weekend for a race in the St. Lucie River, so I would have to arrange for my friend to join us out there. The Elliott Museum would be on the list, as would Sailfish Point and the House of Refuge. If it were a First Friday, we would browse the Creek Art Walk in the Creek Arts District and stop for a wine tasting at the Kling Gallery.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Martin Artisans Guild has been a big part of my success. It is a group of talented artists who support one another, and our art gallery has given me a place to display my work to the public at all times. I am on the Board of Directors of the organization, and we have become friends and colleagues who do everything we can to support our member artists and the art community in general.
