We had the good fortune of connecting with Maceo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maceo, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
That’s such an interesting question to me. The way I see it is that when I feel like giving up that’s when I gotta go harder. I try to think about my music and career like a muscle. I need to push myself to get results, I can’t keep lifting weights that don’t stress my body anymore. You need a bit of weight to progress. So at the hardest moments I know that it’s a test and as long as your eye is on the prize fighting through is going to be worth everything it took to get there.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what’s interesting about my music is that it’s very unapologetically me. That’s in all the not so great things to about myself. I think a lot of people are gravitated towards that and there are a lot of people who look for music like that. Myself included. My vulnerability and my ability to make it feel tangible has been what brings the majority of people to me and my art. It bleeds into every step I make as a musician and people see that, I think. So if I learned anything it’s to REALLY just be myself, and trust myself. Trusting myself as an artist and just individual has been a struggle for me but being able to find success in my music and how people are SEEing kinda what I’m trying to convey, it’s really something.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oooo that’s an interesting question because I’m definitely a home body, HOWEVER, I have my little spots.
For a good meal, one of my favorite places to go to is Dixie Dharma. It’s an amazing vegan spot and no I’m not vegan but the shit is really good. The people there are cool, and if there’s a wait, it’s worth it.
I’m a fan of boutiques and places that just have cool things to look at and buy. Etoile Boutique is a pretty dope spot in the milk district. The energy there is great and once again the people are great.
Lastly, I always take friends to Mead Botanical Garden. I’ma good day, at golden hour, it’s so pretty! Good spot for a picnic, to take a few pictures. I go to clear my head usually or just to look at some flowers.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
If I’ma shout out anybody it’s gonna have to be the fam over at AWFRIP, Duubs, Mel, Frank, all y’all are dope as hell. Thank y’all for trusting my ideas and not like half ass trusting it, but actually trusting my ideas and trusting me enough to live In that world with me and building some cool stuff. It means a whole lot to me. I’m happy to have dropped one piece with you guys and I’m excited to give the world what else we’re cooking.
