We had the good fortune of connecting with Madison Boehm and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Madison, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Every entrepreneur can agree that starting a new business is risky. What if this doesn’t work out? What if I invest all my savings, and it doesn’t go as planned? What if no one is interested in my product? Many successful entrepreneurs we know take significant risks. One that pays off big and allows them to build a successful career or one that means they find themselves entirely out of business. When starting a brand new venture, there are no safety nets. There is not a rule book with step-by-step instructions to help guide you. In most cases, it is up to you as the owner to figure most situations out on your own. The risk are high and the psychological price it takes is often higher. As the owner of a new business, you must be prepared to work extremely hard, often with long hours for very little reward out of the get-go. As a business owner, I think the one thing not many entrepreneurs talk about is the phycological risk you take. You constantly think about your business, and it is tough to turn it off regardless of where you are (out shopping on a Sunday, vacation with the family, etc.). For me personally, there have been many times when I wake up at 3 in the morning thinking about things at work-it is impossible not to. From the beginning of the business conception, everything you do involves a certain level of risk. It could be as mundane as sending out a new promo on an email marketing campaign to test the market to hiring a new senior-level executive. There is no 100% guarantee in anything that you do in business, and as an owner, you must be prepared for that. When my dad (Christian Boehm) and I started Jaxson Maximus three years ago, we knew that it would be all or nothing. I left my offer to join 3M, and Christian Left his past company as one of their senior-level executives to start the business together. Before our concept, combining a high-end men’s salon and custom clothier was unheard of in both industries. You would see either a salon or a clothing store as separate entities but nothing that combines the two. Without both of us taking on that risk, we would not have the business and the team behind it today. Becoming an entrepreneur is not for everyone. There is not just one personally or one career that makes an entrepreneur more successful than the next. However, all great entrepreneurs have in common that they are not scared to take chances. Everything is not going to work out 100% of the time. Every step in building a business involves a certain level of risk and the potential to provide a considerable reward. It is up to you to decide if you are willing to take on that risk.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Jaxson Maximus was founded in 2018 by my father and me, Christian and Madison Boehm. Jaxson Maximus combines a 12 chair men’s salon, custom clothier, and full tailor shop all in one awesome location. Our main storefront is located on the first floor of the Panorama Tower, the tallest residential building outside of Manhattan, in Brickell, and is just short of 4,000 square feet. Our clients are mainly working professional men that are located in Brickell and the surrounding area. On the salon side, we combine traditional barbering techniques with a modern twist. Depending on your hair texture and style, we will either team you up with one of our star barbers or hair stylists. We do everything from hot towel shaves, men’s manicures and pedicures, color services, hair botox, and our signature haircut, which includes a trip to the Zen Room. During your trip to the Zen Room, you will start with a warm paraffin hand treatment, wrapped in warm towels. Once you are in complete relaxation, your stylist will gently massage your face with our Signature Jax Max Cleanser, finished with a hydrating Bro Mask. One of the most popular choices most men decide to do is get one of our signature memberships. They can either do six months or one full year deepening on what they need. In their memberships, they will get unlimited haircuts,10% off Jaxson Maximus salon products and beard services, a custom clothing gift certificate valued up to $500, and a gift card to Prime Cigar and Whiskey lounge valued up to $150. Our memberships are a great gift for any guy you know! The tailor shop is not just limited to Jaxson Maximus garments. We are a full tailor shop that can handle both men’s and women’s garments as well as home care and special requests. We have done everything from wedding dresses, jeans, curtains, and more. At Jaxson Maximus, we provide 100% custom-made garments and related accessories. Your custom pattern, derived from our custom stylist’s measurements of your body, is cut by hand on paper before production by our master cutter. We take over 32 measurements to get the perfect fit for your garment. We never cut corners and make all of our garments for you and you only. Your custom stylists will guide you through the Jaxson Maximus design process during your appointment, which includes selecting your fabrics and all the details such as interior lining, buttons, design, etc. This year, our team was selected as one of the country’s top 20 salons by industry-leading publication Salon Today. We have also been recognized in UK based publication Modern Barber as one of the most innovative salon concepts globally.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We love to have visitors to stay with us! Whenever we have friends in town for a long weekend, we take a few places that are an absolute must on their trip! Let’s say that they are here for a full three days. This would be our itinerary: Day 1: Gulf Stream horse race and casino is an absolute must! I live in Aventura, so we are close to everything in Miami and in Ft. Lauderdale. We like to spend the early afternoon betting on a few races and getting some drinks and lunch on the racetrack. Later in the day, we will take them out to dinner at Yambo in Hialeah. Not only do they have some of the best food, but everything is super cheap! I swear we always walk out of there with two pounds of food-to-go for less than $20. To walk off the food we just ate, we usually spend the night bar hopping around the Wynwood area. Some of our favorites are Gramps and Astra for the great view of the city. Day 2: The second day is when we like to spend the whole day going to the beach. Our go-to beach is Ft. Lauderdale, so that we can hit up Beach Pizza for lunch. After a few hours on the beach, we like to walk around the strand and go to Blondies or Elbow Room for a few drinks. For dinner, our go to is Southport on the intercostal just minutes from the beach! They have amazing oysters, and their shrimps and grits are one of the best-kept secrets in town. Day 3: On the last day, we like to make a trip up to Schnebly winery near Homestead for their amazing selection of wines! Since we have tried about every wine they have, we usually get a bottle or two and split it with the group.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My father, Christian Boehm, CEO and Founder of Jaxson Maximus, and my mom Kelli Boehm I couldn’t be where I am today without the influence and guidance, and encouragement of my parents.
