We had the good fortune of connecting with Makayla Habershaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Makayla, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work/life balance is something that everyone is always chasing after – myself included! When you’re in a management or ownership level sometimes you have to put out little fires everywhere and some of your flexibility is sacrificed. For myself, I always try to be intentional with my actions to set boundaries and create balance every day. Try not to enjoy a meal while working on a project, do one of my daily ritual tasks as a meditation and to ground me. Even if it’s as simple as truly listening to the podcasts that I listen to, I try to be in the moment in my personal life as much as possible to bring balance to my everyday!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve learned a lot of lessons along the way but the biggest one that sums it all up is that you have to advocate for yourself in your work place. The biggest challenge I’ve had to overcome is always being a yes person when it comes to work. I’ve come a long way, and it’s something I’m still working on, but whether it’s asking for a raise or making sure that I don’t put too much on my plate, learning how to advocate for myself in the workplace is something I’m most proud of and the biggest lesson I’ve learned over my career!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend was coming to visit Rhode Island here’s everything that we would do:

First, we’d have to go grab a coffee and take a stroll through Roger Williams Park – the scenery is gorgeous and it’s a nice way to start a hang! Then post our long walk and gab session it would be time for a beverage and a snack so we’d go to Hot Club – the perfect right on the water staple for some mozzarella sticks, a stuffie (stuffed quahog) and a miller high life! Then it would be time to move on to dinner most likely – my favorite would be Chilangos – they have the best margaritas, a warm hug of hospitality, and some of the best food in the city! It’s a must stop for all my visiting friends. The night would then take us to the Eddy for a night cap! The next morning can always be cured by a stop over on Sims Ave where ISCO has the best bloody marys and you hope that Rocket fine foods will be there with their primo food truck foods!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There is! I think all my Rich Auntie Supreme (credit to Rachel Cargle for this term) figures in my life are my inspiration. From my actual own Rich Auntie Supreme who was my godmother, all the older successful women I worked with along the way, even in fictional characters like Miss Piggy, those representations in my life helped me see what being a strong capable women can do!
