We had the good fortune of connecting with makenzie parsons and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi makenzie, why did you pursue a creative career?
i chose this career because i felt like i could never fit in the 9-5 work day life. creative freedom is so important and when im baking / decorating i just am able to go to my own place in my mind and just let go and focus on doing what i love too most!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
i am most proud of myself if i am being honest. life has been a struggle since i was 12 years old. i beat so many hurdles and strived to be the person i am today. i got to where i am by not only myself but the support of my dad. out of anyone around me hes been there my whole life and makes sure to let me know i dont have to do this alone. it definitely was not easy and still isnt. trying to start a business is beyond stressful. the competition, the late nights, you lose more than you profit. its so many obstacles at first. i am still overcoming it because i just started it but i definitely am not giving up and only improving more and more each day. i have definitely learned alot over this process and the biggest one that stuck out to me is the motivation and drive you have to have. there will be somedays where you dont think its for you and you just wanna quit but when i get like that i just breathe and remember that i chose this for a reason and it will all come together i just need to focus and realize it takes time and mistakes are okay. What i would love for the world to know is that i love being here i love doing what im doing. without the people in this world around me i couldnt do this. my clients i hold very dear to me because at the end of the day they are what make you a someone in this industry. i love being able to put smiles on faces by just doing what i love to do. baking has been apart of me since i was 11. cupcakes, cakes, pies if you can name it ive probably made it. life is a rollercoaster and nothing short of surprises but it is so worth living. my favorite thing to say is “if you didnt have the bad days, you wouldnt enjoy the good ones when they are here” i live by that everyday. the biggest thing that needs to be remembered is that you are doing this for you and your happiness so never let that get taken from you. i will always have a drive and motivation for the field of work i am and i can not wait to see where i am in 5 years from now. my brand is named wanderlustwhisks because of the whimsical feeling i love to give people. i have always been a dreamer and a lover of fairytale. i want my cakes to give the same feeling with every bite/ design. from the flavors i want to achieve to just the design is where it really comes into play on the name and its euphoric feeling it may give.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
living in west palm there isnt much to do especially when you are not into the partying scene like me but i would definitely take them Broward to butterfly world. its such a beautiful place and butterflies have always been something i hold near and dear to my heart. i would also take them to this restaurant in Broward called Spankys. they have the best cheesesteaks and they are just so welcoming. i would also take them to a nature preserve we have by lake worth. its so beautiful and has a huge board walk throughout a forest and the atmosphere is just so calming.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
out of anyone i can choose it would be my dad. he has always believed in me even when i didnt anymore. he has always pushed me out of my comfort zone to help me reach my goals in life and if it wasnt for him i dont even think i would be here today. my mom has always been a support too with seeing her ambition and happiness doing things that she knows she can make something is really touching and has always taught me to go for it even with risks. i also wanna thank my best friends ruthie and tori. ruthie is a very special person in my life, she is the biggest ball of sunshine you will ever meet. she has helped me get this business up and running . she has been the best through this whole process and just my life in general i can’t believe i got so lucky with her as a friend. Tori has been apart of my life since we were 13 and has always had my back and made sure life was nothing short of happiness, fun and love. she protects me like no other and i couldnt thank her enough. last but not least would be my boyfriend mikey. whenever i am down he picks me up, be will always be my support and my one person i have to fall on when it gets hard. he is so supportive of my baking i career and its been so amazing .

my mom was a very big part too. she is also very supportive and is always trying to help me learn new things!
