We had the good fortune of connecting with MALAYLA FIELDS and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi MALAYLA, why did you pursue a creative career?
I knew all along I would have a career in fashion. I remember being in fourth grade being asked what I wanted to be growing up and I would say “A lawyer AND a fashion designer”. My mom would encourage me by telling me that I could do both. As a child I was always given the freedom to express myself by picking out my own clothes so I had a great sense of style early on. By the time I got to high school, I enrolled into a magnet program where I began studying fashion. I learned how to sew, learned about fashion history, how to put on a fashion show, etc. At that time, I couldn’t envision myself being in any other field. I eventually earned a fashion merchandising degree and created my own brand. I’ve been involved in every aspect of the fashion business throughout the years from modeling, buying, stylist, working retail, and now designing. My brand is literally my creative outlet!

I design couples matching swimsuits that I call Baecation! My brand is inspired by love and travel. What started out as a senior project in order to graduate has turned into a growing business that brings me so much joy. I’m most proud that people love my designs enough to buy them and create content on social media. Being a small business, we have very little marketing dollars but our business has grown purely from word of mouth over the last 5 years. After studying fashion for a decade before starting my brand I felt confident in knowing trends, silhouettes, and color palettes that would sell. I did extensive research on where to manufacture my designs so that they were high quality and fast turn arounds to meet demand. All new ventures are challenging in the beginning with a lot of trial and error but the passion burns inside me and never lets me give up on my dreams.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I just moved to Miami last month so don’t judge me!!! I love to get dinner in Brickell, bar hop in Wynwood, and catch a beach day at Hallandale Beach!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to my mom for always encouraging me and letting me know I can do whatever and be whoever I want in this world.
