We had the good fortune of connecting with Malka Espinel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malka, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought to start my own business was inspired by my parents. I was brought up in a warm and loving home and my parents are my absolute role models. My parents, having worked hard all of their lives to become educated and skilled, strived to be independent. Observing my parents work together in life and business inspired me to seek the same life by becoming an entrepreneur.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The name of my business is Malka Creative + Delicious. We are a small team that creates delicious custom cakes and creative desserts. Specifically we focus on wedding cakes, special occasion custom design cakes, boutique dessert tables, and fine restaurant dessert menu consulting. I am also a Professor of Pastry at the Miami Culinary Institute and I teach private classes in pastry technique and bread making. What sets us apart is our work ethic and dedication to the finest ingredients and techniques. I am an accomplished executive pastry chef, classically trained in Paris. I consult with each client, some clients are accomplished chefs and others are having a wedding or birthday. I learned that each engagement with a person is a chance at making a valuable contact or even a sale. The lesson is to be open and be dedicated to your craft.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To begin the day, go to Wynwood for breakfast and bread , Go to Zak the baker and Panther Coffee in Wynwood and see the street art and galleries. Go for lunch in Coconut Grove and shop before visiting Monty’s and having stone crabs, then to the Miami River at the Wharf for cocktails. For dinner head to Sunny Isles Beach to Timo Italian Restaurant and save room for a delicious Chocolate Pistachio Bar.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To my parents, for providing me a great example of love, work, and dedication. To my mom, Rebeca, who is a great cook and encouraged me to take classes and provided me a foundation of love and a hard work ethic. I love you.
