We had the good fortune of connecting with Manel Vernerette II and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Manel, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I grew up in a Haitian household of parents who immigrated to the United states for a better life. That unique experience gave me the desire for improvement, drive for success and empathy and compassion.

Desire for Improvement: Growing up in an underserved environment can fuel a strong desire for improvement. Witnessing the challenges faced by oneself and the community can serve as a powerful motivator to work towards a better future.

Drive for Success: Some individuals use their background as a source of determination to succeed. The struggle and adversity faced in underserved communities can instill a strong work ethic and resilience, motivating individuals to strive for success against the odds. Experiencing disparities and injustices may lead individuals to develop a strong sense of purpose. They may be motivated to contribute to positive change within their community, addressing systemic issues and creating opportunities for others.

Empathy and Compassion: Personal experiences of hardship can foster empathy and compassion for others facing similar struggles. This may motivate individuals to work towards creating a more equitable and inclusive society.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Physician associate (PA) can be a rewarding and fulfilling career, it also comes with its own set of challenges and hardships. Here are some aspects that may present difficulties for individuals in this profession:

Demanding Workload: Physician associate often have demanding work schedules, including long hours, evening or weekend shifts, and being on call. This can lead to challenges in maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Emotional Toll: Dealing with patients who are facing serious illnesses or injuries can be emotionally challenging. PAs may witness suffering and difficult situations, which can take a toll on their emotional well-being.

Responsibility and Pressure: Physician assistants have a significant level of responsibility in patient care. They are expected to make critical decisions, and the pressure to provide accurate diagnoses and treatment plans can be intense.
