We had the good fortune of connecting with Manzi Liu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Manzi, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am from China and have had the privilege of studying art in China, France, and the United States. As an artist, my work is deeply inspired by my dreams and aspirations, and my Asian heritage and culture play a very important part in shaping both my work and who I am.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a multi-medium visual artist based in South Florida, originally from China, my artwork is a reflection of my passion for the beauty of human culture, historical objects, and nature. I draw inspiration from both Asian and American cultures and my dreams and memories. By incorporating traditional Oriental elements, such as ancient mythology, clothing, landscapes of historical significance, and antique objects, my style falls somewhere between Surrealism and Expressionism. I primarily work with acrylics, oils, ink, and oil pastels on canvas or paper to create expressive brush movements and bright colors that evoke emotion. What sets me apart from others is my unique blend of influences. I strive to tell a story through my art to evoke hope, strength, and joy for those who view it. I am most proud of overcoming the challenges I have faced and having the courage to pursue my passion for art. Despite it not being an easy path, getting to where I am today professionally was not easy, but it was a journey that taught me valuable lessons.
I used to lack confidence in myself and my abilities, believing that my language barrier would prevent me from getting hired for any job. However, I overcame this challenge by being honest with myself and facing the truth. After working in different careers, I realized that I wasn’t happy and asked myself what I truly wanted to be in life. The answer was an artist. Although it’s a difficult path, it’s the only one that brings me joy and fulfillment.
One of the most important lessons I have learned along the way is to be true to myself and not give up on what I believe is right for me. Many people might try to stop you for any reason, but it’s important to know who you are and what you want.
As an artist and immigrant, I want the world to know that I believe in pursuing one’s passions, even in the face of adversity. My journey has taught me that one should never limit oneself based on perceived limitations or beliefs imposed by others. Instead, it’s essential to go after what you truly love and work tirelessly to make it a reality, no matter the challenges that may arise. By staying true to oneself and persevering, it’s possible to achieve one’s goals and dreams. I hope to inspire others to follow their own paths, regardless of where they come from or what obstacles they face.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother has always believed in me and supported me in pursuing my passion for art. She encouraged me from a young age to pursue my interests, knowing that art was something I was talented in and loved.
Secondly, my husband has also been a strong source of support, encouraging me to follow my dreams and believing in my abilities to succeed.
Thirdly, my friends Erica Mohan and Jeanie Ambrosio have been encouraging and supporting, pushing me to believe in myself and not give up even when things get tough.
Lastly, I want to express my gratitude to Bailey Contemporary Arts of Pompano Beach for giving me the opportunity to become one of their resident artists. The support, encouragement, and recognition I have received there have been invaluable to me, providing me with numerous opportunities to grow and develop as an artist.
