We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcela Guillen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marcela, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I believe life is a risk in itself because nothing is really guaranteed and honestly, I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for taking the risk of following my intuition and trusting the process when opportunities arise and/or there’s lack of thereof. Personally, I believe life is about embracing the uncertainty of the unknown and still going for it specially when it feels the most scary and therefore, challenging… so next time you find yourself overthinking it, just go ahead and take that risk because I promise you that the worst thing that could happen is having to start all over again and sometimes, most times, a good reset is all we really need to bounce back even when we can’t seem to see it just yet!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We are all beautiful in our own way so BeAuTy is truly in the eye of the beholder. I started referring to my craft as a beautypist because beyond the beautiful hair and looks, real raw beauty truly comes from within. In simpler words, I’d say I am a holistic beauty expert; a licensed beautician who specializes in natural hair cutting and coloring with a holistic approach, which basically means that yes, product knowledge and composition are very important but in all realness most of any healing journey starts from within in order to be able to support a healthy body (hair and skin included, of course) and mind. My job is to walk that journey with you, to customize our experience based on your particular needs because we’re all not only beautifully unique in our own way but mainly carry ourselves differently due to our own life circumstances and experience.

I come from a small town in the heart of Central America so life always seemed quite simple but moving to such a diverse city entirely on my own really challenged me in ways I never thought possible and that entirely changed the game for me and made me start questioning everything including who I was and who I wanted to be and that’s when I confirmed I wasn’t here to just fit the mold… It’s definitely not been easy and I’ve wanted to quit so many times I’ve already lost count but once you realize all the best things in life take not only time but also a lot of consistent hard work, you learn grace and therefore, to be a bit more kind not only to others but mainly to yourself. The biggest lesson I’ve learned, as cheesy as it sounds, is that we’re all in this together; each and every single one handling our own battles so after all, under the surface we are not that different as we so hard try to convince ourselves to believe but rather we’re all the same because at the end of the day, we’re all just doing our best with what we’ve got!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Mmm, definitely the beach! I love Hollywood beach because there’s a lot of cool places to hop around in one same spot so it’s hard to choose just one lol although south beach is quite alright too; I love south point’s view and to just enjoy my time there over a picnic and a walk with a view! My fave go to picnic snack is usually any wrap from EVO’s, Publix deli snacks and fruits or Moshi Moshi sushi depending on what I’m feeling for that day… We would also go to the downtown miami area, bayfront park and its surroundings such as the Perez Art Museum and the Frost Science Museum too! Then on to a design district mini tour, starting with the Wynwood walls and followed by some of my fave spots to just chill and hangout such as Love Life Cafe, 1-800 lucky, Mayami, The Oasis, Gramps and El Patio if we’re really feeling like throwing it down because we do love dancing and a good night out! To be honest, for the most part we would be spending lots of quality time in the outdoors like all the parks we can find closer to my area in Coconut Groove and The Gables which I loveee because there’s plenty of areas to safely walk around with lots of places to stop by for a quick bite or drink! I love Pasion del Cielo for a little coffee pick me up, Morelia’s to satisfy the sweet tooth and Calle 23 for a cute happy hour moment to name a few. I enjoy all the Fresh Markets, Movie Theaters and local restaurants I can find so I’m always open to try new spots and would def be doing some research to go and try a few together so there’s some newness for the both of us 🙂

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Ooohh there’s so many great books I’d like to share but what really keeps me going is collective safe spaces of any kind! We basically are what we consume so fill yourself with quality content and people that embraces and stands in their truth. My people aka family, friends, mentors and human canvases as my main support system is truly my biggest blessing! Their love, wisdom and support could never go by unnoticed and I am genuinely so grateful for everyone that truly sees me and therefore, believes in me and my vision enough to be willing to take the risk (see what I did there ;)) of trusting in my abilities!
