We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcelo Galvão and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marcelo, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to start my own business because I have always enjoyed telling my stories, and to do that, I would need to be involved in every step of the process, from crafting the screenplay, to producing my films, directing them, and often editing them as well. Only by having my own production company would I be able to have complete control over all these stages.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a film director who writes, directs, produces, and edits my own films. I learned this entire process out of sheer necessity to tell my stories. It was a challenging journey that I overcame with great resilience and belief in my own potential. My first film cost less than $10,000 and had a tumultuous and challenging production where every possible obstacle to make me give up occurred. The sound technician contracted malaria and couldn’t work on the film, a week before filming the producers resigned due to lack of funds, the cinematographer couldn’t attend due to other TV commercial commitments, the production designer quit before we even started filming, and she remains my wife to this day. Despite all these difficulties, I pushed forward and made a great film that won Best Film at one of the most important festivals in my country. Since then, I have made nine feature films, all highly acclaimed and recognized, including the first original Brazilian film for Netflix. The lesson I take from this is that no matter what others say or do, you have to believe in yourself and pursue your dreams, and they will come true.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my friend to enjoy the beach in Deerfield Beach and we would have lunch at Pampas Gaucho, an excellent Brazilian steakhouse in Pompano. Then we would visit Meisner Park so he could experience that charming place and have a beer at Calaveras, one of the best Mexican restaurants in Boca. In the afternoon, we would watch a movie at IPIC in Meisner Park and end the night by having pizza at Mr O1, the best pizzeria I have ever known, and with a great price.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my story to my entire team, who have always believed in me and helped me create great films. I believe that filmmaking is a collaborative effort that involves numerous individuals, and that’s why I always like to acknowledge my team’s contributions. That’s why I credit all my films as “A film by Marcelo Galvão and Crew.” I would also like to express gratitude to those who doubted my potential, as their skepticism has motivated me to come this far.
