We had the good fortune of connecting with MARCIA MILLER and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi MARCIA, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of our business and our brand is having a clear understanding of our “WHY”. For many years I was the primary caregiver for my Aunt Dorothy. As she declined and had to be placed in an Assisted Living Community, it was clear that a residential setting was more preferable than an institutional one. It offered the person-centered care in a homelike environment more conducive to a better quality of life. Since 2014 our residential community offers other families this viable alternative to a Nursing Home or commercial facility. When we focus on our “Why” we are able to brand our residential community as a viable alternative that provides the same care and ancillary support as the “chandelier” buildings. We are able to serve other families that are no longer able to care for their loved ones in their own home.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Serenity Adult Family Care Home is a 5 bed Residential Assistive Living facility that’s been in operation since 2014. Besides consistently providing “Safe compassionate care” that makes their heart smile, our proudest moment has been maintaining a COVID- FREE community during the pandemic. Our size allowed us to minimize isolation to our residents as we limited visits until it was safe to do so. Running any business is never easy. It has mountains and valley experiences. There are failures and successes. However, serving our clients and their families in this space is our “WHY” and our motivation to overcome these challenges.
Some lessons learned? Its’ a good idea to engage the services of a BUSINESS MENTOR to help with your strategic planning. (Best decision ever). This allowed me to create and develop 2 additional supports for our Industry. Firstly, I am the Founder/Executive Director of The Residential Home Care Network (www.residentialhomecarenetwork.org), a nonprofit advocacy organization to bring brand awareness to the private home facilities. Families are still unaware that this home option exists. Secondly, I created Step One Training Solutions, and launched our signature online training course (Spill the Beans) that offers soft skills training for those wanting to enter this industry and own their own facility. (www.marciamillerexperienc.com). Last but not least I also paired the training with a FREE Affiliate component that offers 10% commission to those looking to make extra money.
Over the years my WHY and PASSION grew for the industry I am privileged to serve. With our Brand SERVING OTHERS is the legacy I hope to leave for the next generation of providers.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Orlando Florida is home for me and a vacation spot for many. When friends come to visit there is never a shortage of things to do. I am Jamaican by birth and an American by choice so I tend to recommend things that reflect this cultural diversity. I am a foodie and so some of my favorite breakfast spots are Kekes Breakfast Café, Another Broken Egg, and Third Watch. For Lunch and or Dinner I enjoy Colibri Mexican Cuisine in Baldwin Park (patio dining with a beautiful water view), Houstons in Winter Park (after your meal take your drink and go sit out back by the lake) and for Jamaican cuisine that reminds me of home I enjoy the food from Golden Krust restaurant on Alafaya Trail East Orlando(Take out/limited dining) These are non-touristy and budget friendly.
For entertainment CitiWalk is a MUST.. wear comfortable shoes and VALET park don’t skip this.. At the end of the night walking to the parking lot is tiring. That said grab a party pass and club hop. For sure we would also head over to Mangos for live shows and dancing. Take one car…Parking is a bear. Last but not least during the day Swan Boat Ride on Lake Eola, Winter Park scenic boat tours and a visit to clearwater Beach and a cruise on Captain Memos Pirate Cruise is worth the drive.. After all that a visit to my church home River of Life Christian Center in Orlando to wind down and complete the visit before heading home. Just a few of my faves.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This Shoutout is for my Bestie Carleen Walker Scott, who passed away in July 2020 after a 3year battle with breast cancer. We met in college and over the years she was my biggest sounding board, cheerleader, business plan reviewer and my go to person in the development of Serenity Adult Family Care Home. I MISS MY FRIEND.
