We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcos Moran and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marcos, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I had already been wakeboarding for over 14 years and I wanted to share all of that knowledge that I had learned and my passion for the sport with others so that’s why I started Gator Bait Wakeboard And Wakesurf School Of Miami LLC. I had worked for two other schools and I always wanted to do things differently so I finally had the oportunity to run my own business. It had been a dream of mine since I was young and it finally came true. 16 years later and I could not be happier! I am now running three boats and have five employees and we are giving lessons yearround.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We give wakeboard and wakesurf lessons to all ages and skill levels. We have 3 MasterCraft X24s and we switch our boats out every 3 or 4 months so we always have new toys! We get all new Ronix boards and O’Neill lifevests every year. All of my coaches and myself are USCG Captains and we are alll trained in CPR and First Aid. And most importantly, we all ride! We try to ride together once every two weeks or so and we all still love it. And we love our customers! It is so much fun for us to teach new people how t ride and see them enjoy this sport that means so much to all of us.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There is so much to do in Miami! I would take them wakeboarding and wakesurfing every day of course! And dinner somewhere completely different ever night. Brickell, The Grove, The Beach, Miracle Mile… the options are endless. I always tell my friends that are visiting from out of town to go out to the everglades and take an airboat tour. That is something that is so unique to Miami that most people would never think of. And then of course to Calle Ocho for dinner and a walk through Little Havana. Cuban culture is such a big part of what Miami is and I always encourage friends to experience it.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My friend Earl. He taught me how to drive a wakeboard boat and how to teach. I worked with him at a wakeboard school when I was in college and I learned so much from him. He spent so many hours teaching me about this sport that I love so much. I owe him big time! Driving a wakeboard boat for someone that is learning is very difficult. The falls can hurt really bad if the boat is going to fast. Earl taught me how to drive slow for beginner riders and how to keep the boat speed steady for advanced riders. I spent years riding with Earl and he helped me with my skills as a rider and a driver.
