We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcus Aurelius Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marcus Aurelius, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
In 2012 while preparing to deploy with the US Army Infantry I suffered a severe spinal injury that left me paralyzed from the neck down. The doctors said the good news was that I lived to tell the tale, the bad news is I was going to spend the rest of my life in my paralyzed condition.
Sharing my story of this personal struggle and overcoming this Adversity to recover is what my TEDx Talk and book “The Gift of Adversity” is all about. If you’re an entreprenuer, leader, author, or artist of any kind you’ll face Adversity over and over. It’s through these hardships that we learn the most about ourselves and what we truly believe.
I see Adversity as a gift because if forces us to up our game and play at a higher level. It never allows us to coast or do just enough to get by. Adversity knows our true potential, even when we do not. Which is why it kicks our ass when we don’t give 100% effort.
The reality is Adversity offers us no other choice, and when there’s no other choice, the choice is simple.
The way we conduct ourself in the face of Adversity is an indication of how we’ll conduct ourselves in every other area of life.
I now teach these lessons to leaders, CEO, and their companies to leverage Adversity to their advantage to reach achieve whatever their vision of success looks like. I’m a leadership coach, international keynote speaker, and podcast host of ACTA NON VERBA
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets me apart from other business and leadership coaches is my experience in overcoming hardship and Adversity. This has given me insights that help the leaders, CEOs, and businesses I coach. overcome their own. I ask the questions that others overlook or are simply afraid to ask and don’t pull any punches. This creates a much deeper and more powerful relationship which makes me a catalyst for positive change. As a speaker and author, I use a powerful and compelling voice that delivers pragmatic wisdom in a way that empowers the audiences I speak for. As a podcaster I’ve interviewed some of the worlds most successful leaders, authors and experts to learn how they make a positive impact on the world and live an extraordinary life based on actions, not words.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Getting to South Beach would be a given. Chartering a boat for the next day would be another must. Visiting the art district to walk around and experience the sights and dinner would be next on the agenda. The Miami night life is something they wouldn’t want to miss, E11EVEN is where you can dance all night. For steak, Nusr-Et Steakhouse Miami is the place you’ve got to get to.. As for seafood, Truluck’s Ocean’s Finest Seafood and Crab and Catch of the Day are hard to beat.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shout out to the author whose work has made a tremendous impact on my life and work. Steven Pressfield’s book “The War of Art” helped me when I was going through the most difficult time in my life and continues to serve me to this day. Thanks Steve
