We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria-Alejandra Icaza Paredes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maria-Alejandra, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
From a young age, I was captivated by the power of art and design to shape the world around me. Growing up in an environment where creativity was nurtured I gained a deep appreciation for artistic expression. I found myself drawn to the potential of design to not only enhance aesthetic experiences but also to solve practical problems and improve the way we interact with our environment; I am driven by a profound desire to make a positive impact on people’s lives. I believe that through innovative design, I can contribute to creating spaces, objects, and experiences that are not only visually appealing but also meaningful and enriching. Ultimately, pursuing a creative career allows me to channel my passion, curiosity, and creativity into a profession that not only fulfills me personally but also allows me to contribute to the greater good by shaping a more beautiful, functional, and harmonious world for everyone.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
A few years ago, my fascination with ceramics took root, evolving from a mere exploration of a new material to a consuming passion. This process offers me control over the pace at which creations materialize, a refreshing departure from the lengthy timelines typical in Architecture and Design.
My latest collection, affectionately referred to as “donuts,” represents a fusion of decorative wall art and organic inspiration drawn from the natural world. Through meticulous craftsmanship, I shape each piece with care, working primarily with porcelain—a clay body known for its temperamental nature. While I once adorned these creations with vibrant glazes, I now opt to showcase the inherent beauty of porcelain in its naked form.
Guided by a pursuit for harmony, I play with composition, volumes, textures, and colors to evoke emotion within each piece. In my creative process, repetition serves as a foundational element, reflecting on the intricate patterns found in nature. While some organic forms maintain their fluidity, others are simplified to their minimal geometric expression.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As someone passionate about art and design, I often find myself drawn to museums and private art collections. A few must visit spots would be the PAMM (Perez Art Musem Miami), ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art Miami), Rubell Museum, The Margulies Collection at the WAREHOUSE, The De la Cruz Collection, and The Bass.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be who I am today without the unwavering love and support of my parents and brother. They always encourage me to pursue my dreams and navigate life’s challenges. My mother, Beatriz Cecilia Paredes, a sculptor, is my greatest creative ally, engaging in endless conversations about art and design.
I’m also grateful for my mentor, Luis Pons, who has guided my creative journey and provided opportunities in interior, furniture, and product design within his design lab.
The Bakehouse Art Complex holds a special place in my heart as my primary creative sanctuary, offering space for clay work. Here, I have the freedom to explore my creativity and learn from talented artists within the community.
