Meet Maria Elena Canovas | Interior Designer / Furniture Consultant

We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Elena Canovas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maria Elena, how do you think about risk?
I believe the biggest risk is not taking a risk. I always dream big and enjoy spending time with successful entrepreneurs and professionals who at an early age were mostly my friends’ parents.
I strongly believe taking risks comes with a lot of responsibility. Our risks can affect many people around us, especially our family. Understanding that taking risks involves both opportunities for growth and development as well as challenges is key to achieving success.
Planning a risk is essential. This may sound contradictory but assessing risks, weighing potential outcomes, and making choices based on how much risk you are comfortable with it’s essential for a positive outcome.
Taking risks took me from Puerto Rico to Boston where I obtained my education, from Boston to Puerto Rico where I had my initial experiences in my professional career, from Puerto Rico to Miami where I had the opportunity to be work with one of the leading architecture and design firms in the US, from Miami to Puerto Rico where together with my husband I embarked in my first business and back to Miami where I was able to achieve one of my long time goals, acquiring, with an old time colleague and friend, a business I had been a part of for 20 years. It sounds exhausting, but every single one of these moves was triggered by circumstances that affected my family’s wellbeing and have created a better life for all.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As principal co-owner of The Bierman Group, one of the top contract furniture manufacturers representative groups in the country! I work closely with the South Florida design community. I have earned their respect by becoming a reliable source for both technical product knowledge and logistics. Developing trusted relationships with our customers is the backbone of our success. Thanks to my academic preparation and experience as a designer, dealer salesperson and manufacturer’s representative I can offer a well-rounded perspective which provides me with the opportunity to become a valuable resource for our customers.
My professional journey started with my education in Architecture at Massachusetts College of Art (Mass Art) in Boston, MA. As a college of art and design, their multidisciplinary approach offered a unique creative experience providing a very diverse perspective to architectural design.
In 1994 I started my career working in prominent architectural firms in Puerto Rico always focused on commercial interior design. During those years I discovered the world of contract furniture, and I was immediately attracted to the opportunity of working with countless design firms in various industries including educational, workplace and healthcare.
By 1998 I decided to venture out to the US in search of bigger and better opportunities. Miami rapidly caught my attention as the dominating Hispanic population made me feel this was my new “home away from home”. I immediately secured a position at Corgan Associates working as an Interior Designer in the very prestigious North Terminal Development project at Miami International Airport. This opportunity allowed me to collaborate with various of the top designers in the city, many who developed into principals and owners who are now some of our best customers.
The year 2000 was key in my transition to becoming an independent manufacturer’s representative. I started working at Corporate Design Choice, a Herman Miller Dealer where I met Randy Bierman. Randy was the representative for various of our top furniture brands and quickly became a great mentor. He offered me the opportunity to represent his manufacturers in Puerto Rico. Being born and raised in the island, in addition to having spent several years working there, I was a great fit for that position. During this transition, since being a designer is where my passion lies, and in an effort to better collaborate with other designers, in 2002 I became an NCIDQ Certified and Registered Interior Designer in the state of Florida.
In 2004 family took me back to Puerto Rico. This allowed me to further develop The Bierman Group in addition to establishing my own turnkey Commercial Interior Design and Furniture consultant firm, Canovas Designs, which I managed for 9 years. However, due to instability in the island’s economy in 2017 I was back in Miami. I rejoined Corporate Design Choice, now as Sales Manager. After growing the sales and design team there I became the Sales Representative for Knoll, an opportunity which I consider provided me with the last piece of experience I needed to undertake all the key roles in the contract furniture industry.
I always felt The Bierman Group was my destiny, not only as a representative but as an owner. In 2019 Randy Bierman was ready to retire and offered Juliana Sharkey, another former Bierman representative and I, the opportunity to purchase the group. This new chapter started on April 1st, 2019. Since then, even though COVID 19 and all the obstacles that presented, we have strived by continuously pursuing new ways to connect and support our design community.
My work is my passion. Being able to collaborate with designers in their process of designing environments which affects how people learn, heal, vacation, live and work is what drives me. I love working in South Florida where the Latin community thrives. And I am grateful that The Bierman Group has provided me with the opportunity to be a part of this community.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, to every visitor I always say, “There are many Miamis”! What I am referring to is that each one of our distinguished neighborhoods is so different and to understand this city you need to visit them all! From Miami Beach to Coral Gables, Wynwood to Doral, Pinecrest to Key Biscayne, Coconut Grove to Midtown and let’s not ever forget the Miami Design District! I would start in South Beach, where a visit to the Versace mansion, a tour of Art Deco Buildings and a stroll through Lincold Road is a must. You can drive to North Miami Beach with stops at the Eden Rock or the Nobu Hotel for lunch and finish the day with a little shopping at the Bal Harbour Shops,
Next is Coral Gables, where my favorite street is Giralda, a walkable street with fantastic restaurants. Talavera, Cebada Rooftop or a little walk to Motek Café for fabulous Mediterranean cuisine. You can visit the historic Biltmore Hotel and then head to The Village of Merick Park for some shopping and dinner. Highly recommend while in that area to eat at Havana Harry’s for award winning Cuban Cuisine.
Another amazing day would take you to 3 adjacent neighborhoods you cannot miss. You can start the day at Midtown for a delicious brunch at Salumeria 104, Lagniappe or Sugarcane, visit the Miami Design District for some shopping and end your day at Wynwood where you can visit some art galleries, the world famous Wynwood Walls and have dinner at one of many tasty restaurants like Uchi and Hiyakawa for Asian or Bakan and Manta for a Mexican or a Peruvian flavor.
Another great day would be spent eating Brunch at Rusty Pelican in Key Biscayne followed by a drive through this unique island. You can then head to Brickell City Center for some shopping and late lunch at Verde at the Perez Art Museum.
One of my favorite things to do is watch ballet and Miami has one of the best! A visit to the beautiful Arsht Center will never disappoint.
Shoma Bazaar at Doral, Mayfair House in Coconut Grove… So many places, so little time!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There have been several key people that have encouraged me to pursue bigger and better things. Also, people who have provided the support to be able to achieve them.
The 3 most important people in my journey have been those who provided support. My mom, my husband and my daughter, have always been extremely supportive of my decisions. My daughter is the person for who I strive to be better every day. Her determination, structure and discipline at such a young age are a real inspiration.
In every step of my professional journey there was someone who provided guidance, mentorship and support. Eddie Underwood, principal of Underwood Architects, Shawn Mcmullin, owner of Corporate Design Choice, Randy Bierman, founder of The Bierman Group, and Marissa Southard, Regional manager at Knoll, all provided me with opportunities and guidance each contributing to my success in a different way.
