We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria & Roberto Lombardo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maria & Roberto, what do you attribute your success to?
My husband and I believe that a passion for the restaurant business is key to our success. In order to truly grow the quality of our product and develop our brand, we our involved daily in the operations, planning and services of the restaurant. We believe that our employees are our biggest asset and they, in turn, will truly dedicate themselves to the process only when they see the owners just as involved as them. In a small family-owned business, this is fundamental to providing a high quality product and excellent customer service, hence customer satisfaction. Eventually, this becomes the fruit for our passion and the inspiration for us to keep constantly evolving.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Mamma Mia Pizzeria & Restaurant 2 was opened in 2009. Initially, it was an offspring of the first location, hence, the number 2. As the years passed, we became more familiar with our community and the culinary desires of our customers. This has been the fuel for our evolution, reinventing ourselves from a traditional New York Style pizzeria into the authentic Italian trattoria. Our location definitely proved its challenges with employees. Located in Homestead, Florida, it was quite difficult to find employees that were willing to drive so far South. At the time, Homestead was very rural and didn’t offer much economically, in comparison to other cities in nearby Miami. However, as the economy in Homestead grew, we took the opportunities it presented, hired qualified staff and began to work on the vision for our restaurant. My husband and I took calculated risks. We saw a growing city, which meant there would be a potential market to sell our product to. Our biggest lesson was not to be absorbed by the industry. Trends are trends because they are temporary. We wanted Mamma Mia Pizzeria & Restaurant 2 to be associated with true Italian food of excellent quality. We now have customers from all over Miami and the Florida keys that are willing to drive the distance to visit us.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would advise they visit the Florida Everglades National Park, Key largo, Isla Morada, 7 mile bridge to the Florida keys, The Homestead Speedway where they host Nascar races

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our children, Francesco & Carla, with their enduring patience on long weekends and missed vacations because we had to work.
