We had the good fortune of connecting with Marianela Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marianela, how do you think about risk?
Some time in life you have to take risks. ” I like to take risks in the use of color, in drawing lines, and in composition”. I was living in Venezuela throughout the period of the anti-government protests in 2017. The rough political and social situation there led me to decide to leave my homeland and to look for a better place to develop my art. leaving every thing behind and reinvent my new life, that was a risk I took looking forward to a new opportunity. In my art work.I employ the metaphor of a glass box which, to me, symbolizes my comfort zone, my familiar and routine space. I imagine that this box shatters into innumerable pieces that remain floating in the atmosphere; there has been a chromatic explosion. Thus, color and angular forms become my main vehicles of expression. In my work everything changes, everything transforms itself. I like to take risks in the use of color, in drawing lines, and in composition. Each work is assembled as a puzzle to which each color and each shape is fitted into its own space. In undertaking this creative risk, I am affirming the strength and courage that comes from walking new paths all the while discovering my internal potential. Everything is possible when you have passion and believe in yourself. The meaning of the colors in my work, and the lines and pointed angles too, refer to my ability to freely express myself and to share my vision of how to contribute to building a better society. I employ geometric abstraction to change and transform reality into a colorful and positive atmosphere.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

I am a visual contemporary artist, I express myself in a geometric and abstract way.

Most of my geometric work derives from photography. I capture every-day images -the urban landscape, architecture, traffic or fragments of nature- and I break them down digitally, converting them in lines and angles. In this sense, geometric abstraction for me is not a philosophy or a mathematics derivative, but a way to perceive, to think and interpret reality; a way to give an aesthetic sense to my perception and subjectivity. My language embraces what is heterogeneous.  I like working with different techniques and use of color, line drawing, composition, and themes. I’ve used collage throughout all my career but during this year 2020 I rediscover it because It is a technique that allows me to mix media, surfaces, juxtapose abstract forms and figures, combine textures and energize the space of the creation. Collage also appeals to me because the words and phrases that remain in the cut-out papers, as they are chosen and pasted, trigger multiple meanings. This technique allows me to work over the paper in small dimensions, which invites a more intimate look, attentive to the subtlety of textures, fine strokes and transparencies.

This year 2020 has been very unusual and different for everyone, for me in my artwork, I have explored an introspective exercise and discovered a different angle with the use of collage, I took a pause to study and researched more. It’s actually been a really productive year and it’s building up with the creation of new pieces of artwork that keeps me busy.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, I live in Boca Raton Fl.  We will go and relax at the beach in Boca, We could take a Walk around Mizner Park center in downtown Boca Raton, where we can have something to eat or drink, this place is pretty cool.  It would be an opportunity to visit the Boca Museum of Art. We could go to the town center mall, which is the best place to shop. We can rent a bike at the Boca Bike shop. Visit the beautiful Morikami museum and Japanese Garden. We can go in a boat, for an adventure in and around Boca Raton. There are many things to do at Boca Raton Fl.
