Meet Marijana Marinovic | Photographer and journalist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marijana Marinovic and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was born and raised in the heart of town, in old family who is almost 400 years live in Split, Croatia. My playground was Diocletian Palace, my first polaroid (when I was 5) captured at Riva (it was palm tree and seagull), my first photostory for faculty was about places from my childhood and youth (Riva, Prokurative, Peristil, Vidilica, Bacvice beach….). I was always some kind of storyteller (that why I have Master degree of journalism from Political Science, University of Zagreb) and official photographer in my family and friends circle, so through my work of journalism and few photo exhibitions, I decided to go more into photography. And for last 8 years, I`m Croatian New Yorker: I`m living and working as correspondent for Croatian newspaper and magazines and also as professional photographer (I have photography diploma from New York Film Academy). The bigest challenge for me was leaving my family and friends to establish new life, also a new career as photographer in NYC. Luckily I was able to overcome that, create a new and fulfilled life, in NY artistic circles and professional networking. My style is mostly photojournalism with touch of art, trying to capture special moment, joy and happiness for lifestyle memories.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Wooow. Not an easy question. So, I lived in Astoria, Queens, so every morning before gym or meeting or photo session I’m drinking coffee in best coffee shop Balancero. For brunch I love to go to Soho`s Balthazar restaurant or in West Village peruvian restaurant Baby Brasa. For dinner and cocktails I would also visit Baby Brasa, for it is great live music or guests DJ`s, relaxing atmosphere with artistic, stylish and fashionable crowd. Also, the food is amazing. As member of Fotografiska museum, I hang out there a lot, meeting new photographers, getting inspired by multiple photography shows. Sometimes I like to have dinner and drinks at Veronica restaurant. As art lover, I often visit MoMa, Whitney or Metropolitan museum, as well as numerous art galleries in Soho or Chelsea. For weekend brunch I love to go to french restaurant Recette in Williamsburg, cool neighborhood for shopping and spending time with friends. My favorite locations to chill out and enjoy the outdoors are Central Park and Dumbo.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My inspiration are Little Prince, my favorite book and Charlie Chaplin, greatest artist of all time.
