We had the good fortune of connecting with Marisa Colon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marisa, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I grew up in East Harlem, New York, a vibrant and diverse community that instilled in me a strong sense of resilience and determination. Moving to Miami has been an exciting transition, exposing me to new cultures and perspectives. My upbringing in East Harlem taught me the value of hard work and community, traits that continue to shape my approach to life and work. I’m eager to bring the lessons I’ve learned from both places into this new chapter of my life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Photography is a reflection of my journey. What sets me apart is my commitment to authenticity and storytelling through my work. I’m most proud of the connections I’ve forged with viewers who resonate with the narratives I portray.

Professionally, getting to where I am today has been a journey of perseverance and self-discovery. It hasn’t always been easy; I’ve faced challenges like self-doubt and navigating the competitive art world. However, each obstacle has been a lesson in resilience and creativity. I’ve learned the importance of staying true to my vision while remaining adaptable to change.

What I want the world to know about my art is that it’s more than just visual expression—it’s a platform for dialogue and connection. My brand is rooted in authenticity and inclusivity, inviting people from all walks of life to engage with my stories and find pieces of themselves within them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Day 3: Vizcaya Museum and Gardens for stunning architecture and lush gardens. Lunch at Versailles for Cuban sandwiches. Spend the evening at Pérez Art Museum Miami.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my family and friends who have been unwavering in their support and encouragement throughout my journey. Their belief in me has been a constant source of motivation and strength. Additionally, I want to recognize the mentors and teachers who have guided me and imparted invaluable wisdom along the way. Their mentorship has played a significant role in shaping who I am today, and I am truly grateful for their guidance.
