We had the good fortune of connecting with Marissa Cox and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marissa, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always been interested in baking since I was a kid and would try out recipes that I would give to friends, family, and co-workers. It was a stress reliever, but it also made me happy to see someone enjoying what I made. But I lacked the confidence to try the more elaborate cookie decorating designs, which are like works of art. Once COVID hit I had a lot of time on my hands and figured why not try a cookie decorating class. I took one and I was hooked! I would practice and send pics of my cookies to friends. It sort of snowballed from there. My friends would ask me to make them special designs for their parties, then their friends, and so on. I worked on perfecting my recipe so that not only are the cookies pretty, but they also taste good.
Then I took the leap and started a business. I used to have an extremely stressful career, but now I love what I do. I’m happy, and I can spend more time with my children while growing my business. I love seeing the happiness and delight in people’s faces when they receive a beautifully decorated and delicious cookie, as well as the relationships I form with them as I become part of their special events.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The orders, for sure! I strive to make sure my cookies look good and taste good. Far too often you hear about custom cookies that were beautiful, but tasted like cardboard. Who wants that?! It’s taken me a lot of research, testing, and designing to get my product where it is. I’m dedicated to giving my customers a quality product.
Getting to where I am today was definitely not an easy journey. I’ve never run a business before, and I’m doing that on top of raising 2 young children. I don’t give up though and I’m constantly learning more as I go. It definitely helps having a really good support system.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many amazing places in South Florida that I couldn’t name just one!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Everyone who has supported me through this journey: my husband, my mom, and friends. I’m also extremely fortunate to have amazing customers who deserve a shout out for their overwhelming support. They’re the driving force behind this business.
