We had the good fortune of connecting with Maritza Golaub and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maritza, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor to my success thus far has been to remain authentic, and unapologetically myself. I know it sounds corny, but that is truly how I’ve been able to thrive in both medicine and modeling. I’ve often been told that I should not be engaging in other hobbies outside of medicine, but I advocate for multi faceted individuals and push to show others that you do not have to be dictated solely by your career. We are so much more than just our jobs! Having a passion outside of medicine has truly helped me balance the rigors and stress of medical school. I have been posting for years with my theme of “you can do it all”. I will always encourage others to be their true selves, and the right tribe/ supporters will find you!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m Maritza, a third-year medical student and model/ influencer based in Miami and the Caribbean. I strive to be a physician, while influencing my peers to lead healthy and fulfilling lives, emphasizing the importance of balance. I aim to challenge the “traditional” image of a medical student and demonstrate that maintaining work life balance is imperative to overall well-being! My content focuses on the intersection between my lifestyle in medical school and modeling.
I knew I wanted to be a physician when I was just 4 years old, after my father got diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. His cardiologist saved his life and sparked my interest in wanting to save lives and do the same for others! Modeling and content creation started as just a hobby. I was pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience at FAU, when a friend of mine asked me to do a test photoshoot for fun. I was then invited to work for various brands after posting these test photoshoots more consistently, and, from there, modeling became less of a hobby and more of a part-time job that I loved doing.
This road has not been easy, as I have always been told to “pick a career”. However, I refuse to let others dictate my career path and limitations. It took a lot of proving myself in both industries to have others see me as competitive and really make a name for myself. There were days where I would do a brand photoshoot all morning and need to study in the library until midnight to make up for it. These are the moments that required work ethic more than motivation. I learned to fight through the hard days and keep pushing myself to reach my highest potential. I want the world to know that my biggest factor is the success I have had thus far is CONSISTENCY and having a few good people around who believe in you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would 100% take my best friend to the SLS hotel for a pool party! On Sundays, I enjoy going to Copper Blues for brunch and then my friends and I usually rent out a yacht / get on jetskis if there is any kid of celebration. One of my favorite Taco places is “El Camino”, Fort Lauderdale. Jaya at the Setai is excellent for a beautiful upscale dinner. For daytime fun i usually go to Wynwood Walls, where there are numerous hotels and restaurants. “Coyo Taco” is a fantastic restaurant in Wynwood as well. South Florida is also well known for the museums, such as PEREZ or the new Balloon museum!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to my parents! I could have never made it to my second year of medical school without them, and they support ALL my endeavors! <3
