We had the good fortune of connecting with Mark Pierre and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mark, how do you think about risk?
Risk is super important! I know it’s this scary word with a negative connotation, but the only thing between anyone and everything they ever wanted is a risk and some faith.
Your comfort zone will never take you to new heights.
That’s not to say to just be doing wild stuff or be reckless. Calculated risks made with intention are the name of the game.
I took a risk spending thousands on studio equipment so I could learn how to record and engineer for myself and my other artists; four months later, the world shutdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic and no one could book studio time. Our label released eight projects that year and didn’t miss a beat.
I took a risk spending $180 I didn’t have to perform at this Miami pop-up event by MadeinPhlly. I never heard of it before my brother sent me the flyer and that was my first performance ever; well, that one performance and the connection I forged with Phlly directly led to more shows (one which I flew out to Atlanta for), me playing in a celebrity game, me being picked to be on this mixtape that Jim Jones and Quarantine Studios is releasing soon and so much more, to be honest.
I say all that to say that you have to be willing to risk things for your dream, Your comfort, your money, relationships, etc. If you’re not willing to, maybe you need to do some self-reflection and see if that dream you have is really even what you truly want.
I don’t regret a single risk I’ve taken on this journey so far and those risks have literally been what’s kept me ascending, so I will keep taking them.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is truly my own. A far as music, I produce, write and engineer all my own tracks, so whenever you hear something from me, it truly is a manifestation of my soul and spirit. I really love that because my sound will grow as I do. Not only will my artistry grow and change over my career and my life, but so will the way the music sounds overall. I can’t even imagine what a KK the Artist project will sound like in 2030, but I’m hella excited to find out.
I got to where I am today because I’m an eternal student. I go into every single day with the intention of becoming a better me than I was yesterday. That means knowing that I don’t know everything and always pursuing knowledge and growth above all else.
It hasn’t been an easy road at all, but I’ve known I was special since I was four years old. I’ve known my path is not meant to be regular since then. That type of path is not going to come easy, so that knowing of who I am and what I’m meant to do here is how I overcome those challenges and tough days.
Having Trey as a business partner and brother has also helped me overcome the challenges, No matter what happens, I know I’m not alone and that we’re in this journey to change the world together. So even on my shittiest day or when I’m drained with no more to give, I know he’s still pushing for us and vice-versa. Between the two of us, there’s no force on earth that can stop us.
I’ve learned so much along the way to this point. One thing I’ve learned is that support really is at a premium. Especially in the black community. I’ve spent the last three years watching people who say they love me go out of their way not to support me even when I ask for it. That was the biggest pill to swallow in the beginning.
I know, and have impacted the lives of, so many people and have supported so many people in every way I could, so i really thought everybody would be lining up to pour back into me and return the energy. That definitely hasn’t been the case and I’ve seen that my biggest supporters have been people I wasn’t close to. I don’t even know why that’s the case, but I hear that’s how it is for most artists and creatives.
I want the world to know that music and being a superstar isn’t my mission. For me, music is a tool for my true mission: making the world a place for everyone.
There’s no reason people should be homeless while billionaires are flying to space on a Tuesday. There’s no reason people have to work 40 hours a week to get paid every two weeks and still be broke, tired and stressed while their actual dreams die.
So I’m using my love for music to spread my message and get me where I need to be to able to really change things on a grand scale.
That being said, supporting me is way bigger than my sound and some hot tracks. It truly is supporting a world of love, positivity and pure authenticity. I won’t stop until I make it happen.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ooo I wasn’t ready for this question. I was born and raised in Miami, yet I feel like I haven’t seen any of it. It’s wild.
Wynwood is definitely a must. Just for the aesthetic and vibes. If they wanna be in the mix, we definitely gotta hit South Beach and turn up with the tourists.
As far as food, I’m vegan so we’d have to hit up the Organic Food Kings food truck. I’ve spent way more money there than I’m proud to admit. We’d also have to hit SoBe Vegan, House of Mac, and Miami Subs.
When it comes to spots to hang out, we gotta hit Top Golf, Fat Tuesdays, and The Hard Rock. I’d also take them to a MadeinPhlly event.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Whew! I want to give a huge shoutout to my parents. I graduated university then decided I was going to start making beats and then decided to become an artist and founded a whole record label and been pursuing that full-time. That literally sounds like a lot of parents’ worst nightmare.
It’s been about three years since then and my parents have never put any pressure on me to abandon my dreams for a more “practical route” or to do anything other than be me. That’s been huge because this is already a tough road to be on. I can’t imagine where my mental health would be if my family wasn’t supportive. They make me feel like I’m exactly where I need to be and I can’t wait til’ the fruits of my labor are so plentiful that I can truly show them how much I appreciate them, their support and their love.
I’d also love to give a huge shoutout to the fraternity that I am so honored and blessed to be a member of. Since joining Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated, I’ve gained invaluable perspective on life. I understand what it is to have a goal in sight and be willing to do whatever it takes to get there. I understand that showing up and having faith will take you much farther than a lot of people realize.
That experience gained as well as the business experience I gained has had a huge impact on this journey I’m on now. My fraternity is also how I met Trey Rice (cofounder of our record label, as well as an artist), so without pledging Kappa, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation right now.
