We had the good fortune of connecting with Marketa Gajdosova and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marketa, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
By the end of my career, my ultimate goal is to revolutionize the field of nutrition consulting in the Czech Republic. As a former client myself, I was dissatisfied with the approach of many professionals in the field, who often did not view human health holistically and ignored the psychological aspects. Nutrition is not just about calories; it is about our relationship with food. This motivated me to seek advanced education and bring about meaningful change, aiming to elevate the standards.
This vision drove my decision to pursue studies at one of the top research universities in the USA, majoring in Nutrition and Dietetics at FIU Miami. The exposure to cutting-edge research, advanced methodologies, and diverse perspectives in nutrition science has been invaluable. My experience here has broadened my understanding of the field and equipped me with the skills and insights necessary to make a significant impact back home.
In the USA, I have learned from leading experts and witnessed firsthand the integration of science into both clinical and lifestyle nutrition. My goal is to bring these best practices back to the Czech Republic, adapting them to our cultural context and healthcare system.
By establishing a new standard of nutrition consulting, I aim to improve public health outcomes, reduce the incidence of diet-related diseases, and ultimately enhance the quality of life for individuals across the country. This is more than just a professional aspiration; it’s a personal mission. I want to end my career knowing that I gave it my all.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart in the field of nutrition is my unwavering passion and commitment. I don’t view nutrition just as my career; I truly see it as my life’s mission. This passion drove me to take significant financial and personal risks, including dedicating many years to studying abroad at leading institutions, learning from top experts, and continually striving to become the best dietitian I can be.
This journey has been far from easy. It involved countless challenges, including adapting to new environments and overcoming academic and professional obstacles. However, these experiences have shaped me into who I am today.
One of the aspects I am most proud of is the transformation I witness through the lens of nutrition. Becoming a dietitian means seeing clients’ progress and knowing that I play a part in their journey toward better health, which is incredibly rewarding.
Key lessons I’ve learned along the way include the importance of empathy, the power of resilience, and the necessity of continuous learning. I believe in the profound impact of a well-balanced diet not just on physical health, but also on mental well-being.
My approach embodies these principles. It’s built on trust, expertise, and a deep commitment to helping clients achieve their potential. I want the world to know that through dedication and personalized nutrition, anyone can transform their health and life.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For a week-long trip in Miami, I’d start with a visit to South Beach, then head to Little Havana for authentic Cuban cuisine at Versailles and a cultural experience at Ball & Chain. We’d explore the art scene in Wynwood Walls, enjoy a relaxing day at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, and have a memorable dinner at Joe’s Stone Crab. Finally, we’d wrap up with a boat tour of Biscayne Bay and a night out in the vibrant Brickell district.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Firstly, I want to give a shout out to Carolyn Costin, my valued supervisor and one of the most recognized clinicians in the field of eating disorders. She deserves immense recognition, not only for her guidance during my CCI certification but also for significantly enhancing my expertise in this area far beyond that time. Her guidance and expertise have been invaluable.
Additionally, Susan Peahl, whom I call my “American mum,” has been there for me with unwavering support and love since 2016.
Lastly, I want to mention Kristina Lebedeva, my academic mentor who has stood by my side from the very beginning.
